FLORENCE, KY - Gateway starting pitcher Ja'Vaun West allowed only one hit in seven innings and the Grizzlies cruised to a 6-1 victory against the Florence Freedom Thursday night at UCMC Stadium.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak and helped the Grizzlies (10-7) avoid the series sweep.

West (3-0), who lowered his ERA to 1.88, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before surrendering a lead off infield single to Florence (11-7) infielder Eric Groff. West did not allow a run and struck out five batters while throwing a career-high 120 pitches. The right-hander from Atlanta, MO, who picked up the win, also walked a career-high six batters.

Gateway scored an unearned run in the first inning to jump out to a 1-0 lead, thanks to a Jacob Tanis error at third base.

Vladimir Frias smacked a two-run triple to give Gateway a 3-0 lead in the third. The triple was the first of the season for Frias, who drove in his eighth and ninth runs.

The Grizzlies finished up their scoring in the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits. Michael Pair drove in a run on a single and Landon Hernandez knocked in two runs with a single.

Florence scored their only run of the game in the eighth inning off Grizzlies reliever Jason Sullivan.

The Grizzlies continue their seven games in five days stretch on Friday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, MO against the River City Rascals. Left-hander Gregg Downing (1-1) starts for Gateway. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
