Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH - Lefthander Kyle Lobstein became the first Erie pitcher to toss a complete game this season when he went the distance in the SeaWolves' 4-3 victory over the Akron Aeros on Tuesday night at Canal Park.
The SeaWolves (19-11) used a three-run sixth, highlighted by Luis Castillo's two-run single, to erase a 3-1 Aeros lead. Erie has won the first two games of the series, and will go for the sweep in the wrap-up Wednesday morning at 10:35.
Lobstein (4-2) threw his third career complete game. The 23-year-old scattered seven hits, and allowed three runs. He issued three walks and struck out seven, and won his third straight game. Lobstein threw 114 pitches in the game, and retired the final five batters he faced.
Akron (15-17) took a 3-1 lead in the fifth when Justin Toole blooped a two-run single to right off Lobstein. It was Toole's first two RBI since joining the Aeros on Monday. The only other Aeros run was driven in by a Chun Chen sacrifice fly in the third.
For the second straight night, the sixth inning proved to be the charm for the SeaWolves and the downfall for the Aeros. Righthander Kyle Landis allowed a hit and two walks to load the bases with none out. After getting a fielder's choice on an out at home, Landis (1-2) left with an apparent injury to his right side. Righthander Bryce Stowell entered the game and gave up a single to Wade Gaynor to make it 3-2, and then the base hit by Castillo to make it 4-3, Erie. All the runs were charged to Landis.
Landis had entered the game for Akron starter Danny Salazar, who left after reaching a pre-determined limit of five innings. Salazar, one of the Indians organization's top prospects, gave up five hits over five innings. He allowed one run and struck out eight. When he allowed a run in the fourth, it snapped his streak of 20 straight scoreless innings.
Over his last four outings, Salazar has pitched 21 innings, allowing one run, with five walks and 38 strikeouts. Salazar's workload is carefully monitored and controlled by the Aeros and Indians player development staff because he is still recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Giovanny Urshela had two hits for the Aeros, and now has a five-game hitting streak. He is 8-17 (.471) during the streak. Carlos Moncrief was 0-4, snapping his eight-game hitting streak.
In a quick turnaround, the Aeros and SeaWolves will conclude the series and the homestand on Wednesday morning at 10:35. RHP Patrick Cooper (1-2, 5.19) will start for Erie, while LHP Matt Packer (0-4, 4.60) will make the start for Akron. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
