Beloit, WI- The Beloit Snappers held the Quad Cities River Bandits to one run until the top of the ninth inning when the River Bandits tacked on four runs. The Snappers hung on to the lead picking up the 6-5 win Saturday night.
Tyler Jones allowed the first run of the ballgame in the top of the first when Stephen Piscotty hit an RBI single scoring Nick Martini, who singled.
J.D. Williams hit his 15th double of the season in the bottom of the first, and then advanced to third when Eddie Rosario grounded out. Kennys Vargas followed up with a double to score Williams making it 1-1.
Nate Roberts picked up his 33rd RBI of the season when he hit a single to score Matt Koch, who doubled giving the Snappers a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
Rosario doubled in the bottom of the fifth inning, stole second, and then scored on a sac fly by Vargas to give the Snappers a 3-1 lead.
Stephen Wickens beat out a double play in the bottom of the seventh to bring in a run with the bases loaded making it a 4-1 lead for Beloit.
Mason Melotakis relieved Jones in the top of the eighth. Jones worked an impressive seven innings allowing just four hits and one run. He recorded nine strikeouts and did not walk a single batter in his outing.
The Snappers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth giving them a 6-1 lead when Tyler Grimes scored on a ground out by Rosario. Grimes singled, reached second when Lin was hit by a pitch, and reached third on an error by Walsh. Lin scored the second run on a wild pitch.
The River Bandits trailed 6-1 heading into the top of the ninth, but managed to score four runs. Tim Atherton loaded the bases after relieving Melotakis. Colin Walsh had a leadoff walk, followed with Stephen Piscotty getting hit by a pitch, and another walk for David Medina to load the bases for Luis Mateo. DJ Baxendale came in for Atherton and allowed a two-run single by Mateo to make it 6-3. Rasmus then singled to load the bases yet again for the River Bandits. Gary Apelian hit a two-run single to score Medina and Mateo decreasing their deficit to just one run. Matt Williams then hit a bouncer to third and A.J. Pettersen stretched to tag out Rasmus at third, and then threw to first to get Williams for the game-ending double play. The Snappers hung on to win it 6-5 against the River Bandits, eliminating the Bandits from playoff contention.
Tomorrow the Snappers and River Bandits play at 2:00 PM with Matt Tomshaw on the mound, who is 4-5 with a 2.95 ERA. Tomorrow is Stateline News Family Fun Sunday!
