Clinton LumberKings News Release

Burlington, IA - The Clinton LumberKings' bats stayed as hot as the weather on Sunday afternoon at Community Field. Clinton wrapped out 15 hits on their way to a 15-7 win over the Burlington Bees. The victory was the fifth straight for the LumberKings and moved them into first place in the Western Division of the Midwest League.

The 15 hits came less than 24 hours after the LumberKings pounded out 18 in the series finale with the Beloit Snappers. In their last five games, Clinton has scored a whopping 45 runs and has a remarkable 70 hits.

Jamal Austin and Ji-Man Choi led the charge for the second consecutive day. After going 5-5 last night, Austin started Sunday's game with four hits in his first four at bats. The perfect 9-9 tied a Midwest League record for consecutive at bats with a hit. Choi hit his fourth home run in his last five games and finished with another multi-hit game, his tenth of the year.

Ramon Morla and Guillermo Pimentel added three hits apiece and combined to drive in six runs. Morla fell a home run shy of the cycle. Pimentel didn't start the game but came on as a pinch-hitter in the second inning and promptly blasted a two-run home run. Pimentel replaced Nate Melendres who left the game after he crashed into the outfield wall on Sean Jamieson's lead-off triple in the bottom of the first inning. Melendres stayed in the game to finish the inning but exited when his spot came up in the batting order. He was taken to a local Burlington hospital for precautionary reasons.

Clinton also lost catcher Mike Dowd who was hit with a 3-2 fastball from Bees starter Raul Alcantara. Like Melendres, Dowd stayed in the game and finished the half-inning but Steve Baron took over behind the plate the next frame. Dowd is listed as day-to-day with a bruised wrist.

Mayckol Guaipe earned his first win of the year with Clinton despite struggling to get through five innings. The right- hander allowed five earned runs on eight hits and two walks. Guaipe also hit two batters. Alcantara was lit up by Clinton for the second time this year and has allowed 20 runs in two starts against the LumberKings.

The two teams play game two of the three-game set on Monday night in Burlington. Clinton turns to right-hander Trevor Miller (5-5, 3.62) who has been stellar in two second-half starts. Burlington counters with right-hander Max Perlman (1-3, 3.61). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
