TinCaps Win Rain-Shortened Game, 4-0

EASTLAKE, Ohio - In a game that ended after six innings due to torrential rain, whistling wind and tornado-like conditions, the Fort Wayne TinCaps emerged 4-0 winners over the Lake County Captains on Sunday night at Classic Park. Ohio native Matt Wisler limited the Captains to just two hits, and Travis Whitmore belted his fourth home run of the year in the shutout effort.

Neither team was able to score in the first two innings as neither Wisler nor Lake County (5-5, 36-43) starter Shawn Morimando (2-2) would yield a run in the early going. In the third inning, Tyler Stubblefield and Felix Cabrera hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Stubblefield advanced to third on Cabrera's single, and then came in to score on a groundout to second by Jace Peterson.

One run was all the advantage Wisler (3-4) would need, as he continued his Buckeye State dominance. Earning the victory on Sunday, he improved his record to 3-0 in the state of Ohio, where he has twirled 17 scoreless innings this season. Sunday he struck out six, allowed two hits and did not walk a batter in six innings of work.

Fort Wayne (7-3, 38-42) tacked on three more runs against Morimando in the sixth inning. Yeison Asencio sent Jace Peterson across the plate on a sacrifice fly, giving the TinCaps a 2-0 advantage. Travis Whitmore then blasted a two-run home run over the wall in right field to make the score 4-0.

At the conclusion of the sixth inning, the Lake County grounds crew scrambled into action to cover the field with the tarp. Strong winds and swirling grey clouds emerged from beyond the third base concourse, quickly dumping inches of rain upon Classic Park. Both teams evacuated the field and headed for the clubhouses, located beyond the right field wall. The grounds crew remained on the field for several minutes in an effort to hold the tarp down, as puddles formed in the outfield and on the warning track. The game was officially called at 8:57 PM, and clocked in at one hour, twenty-three minutes.

Sunday's action marks the first time all year the TinCaps have not gone to the bullpen, giving Wisler the first complete game by a TinCaps pitcher in 2012.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Monday night at 7:00. The scheduled starters are Cody Hebner for Fort Wayne and Mason Radeke for Lake County.
