Kane County Cougars News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - With four runs in the ninth inning, the Kane County Cougars got more than enough insurance to knock off the Peoria Chiefs, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field.
Kane County (40-40, 6-4) never trailed but had a slim, 3-2 advantage entering the final frame. Danny Mateo began the inning with a double off reliever Larry Suarez and eventually scored on a sac fly from Michael Antonio. The Cougars weren't done there as Julio Aparicio singled before a Murray Watts walk while Dean Espy slammed a three-run homer to left, putting the Cougars up by five.
Peoria (38-41, 3-7) wasted a solid effort from starter Starling Peralta (1-3), who tossed eight innings while allowing just two earned runs on four hits. Peralta coughed up a pair in the second as Watts doubled off the wall in left to score Aparicio, after he was hit by a pitch with two outs. Espy followed by singling on the infield, but an errant throw from Zeke DeVoss allowed Watts to come home.
Jason Mitchell (3-4) gave up two runs on seven hits in his five innings of work. DeVoss singled in Yaniel Cabezas in the third to put the Chiefs on the board while Javier Baez was hit by a pitch and scored on a sac fly from Wes Darvill in the fourth. Jorge Bonifacio drilled a solo homer in the top of the fourth to keep the Cougars on top. Jonathan Dooley went three shutout innings for the Cougars while Malcom Culver pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
