Burlington Bees News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Top prospect A.J. Cole gave the Burlington Bees (38-40, 6-3) an outstanding performance in the Bees 5-to-0 win over Kane County (39-40, 5-4). Cole struck out nine batters as the Bees avoided a sweep and maintained the best record in the Midwest League West.
Cole made his eighth start for the Bees on Saturday and simply dominated the Cougars with his fast- ball and breaking ball. The right-hander allowed three hits through the first three innings, but did not allow a base runner in his last three innings of work.
Overall, Cole had nine strikeouts in six innings and only allowed three hits. The right-hander did not allow a walk and all three hits he allowed were singles. Cole (4-0) managed to strike out at least one batter in each of the six innings he worked and earned his fourth win.
Cole's start looked nothing like his first start against the Cougars. He made his debut with the Bees on May 24 and allowed 12 hits and eight runs (five earned). Since then Cole has not allowed more than two runs in a start and has earned a win in his last two outings.
Wade Kirkland and Bobby Crocker led the offense in game three. Crocker went 4-for-5 with four singles, an RBI, and two runs scored. Crocker scored the first run of the game on an RBI double by Wade Kirkland. Kirkland had three doubles in four at bats and earned two RBIs in the Bees' win. Kirk- land leads the team with 17 doubles this season.
Drew Tyson and Jose Macias pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Bees had allowed 29 runs in the last four games and had lost the first two games of the series in Kane County before the shutout-win. The Bees also ended an eight-game losing streak to the Cou- gars and are tied with the Quad Cities for the top spot in the Midwest League West.
The Bees return to Burlington for a three-game series with the Clinton LumberKings. Raul Alcantara gets the start for Sunday's 2 p.m. game.
