Steelheads Draft 30th and 69th in 2012 Import Draft

June 27, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Mississauga Steelheads

Mississauga, ONT - In the wake of the highly publicized 2012 NHL Entry Draft which saw Mississauga Steelheads forward Trevor Carrick go 115th overall to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Mississauga Steelheads are now proud to announce that we have selected Sam Babintsev (30th overall) and Andrei Vasilevski (69th overall) in the 2012 Import Draft.

Sam Babintsev, born 1994-10-08, 183cm/6'0", 161lbs, is a right winger and Captain for the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies under 18 team of the MWEHL. During the 2011/2012 season, Babintsev recorded 30 points in 39 games. Mississauga Steelheads Head Coach and GM, James Boyd, had this to say about the team's selection: "Sam is a hard working player and we are excited to have him as part of our organization."

Andrei Vasilevski, born 1994-07-25, 190cm/6'3", 203lbs, is a Russian Goaltender who was recently drafted in the first round (19th overall) by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Andrei has been a stand out goalie both in Russia and throughout the last three World Junior tournaments. Most recently in the 2012 World Junior Championship, Vasilevski helped Team Russia capture the silver medal after ending out the tournament with four wins, two shutouts, a 2.01 goals against average and a .953 save-percentage. His mobility and quickness as a goaltender has made him widely acclaimed as one of the top ranked goalies in the world in his age group.

We would like to welcome both of these players to the Steelheads organization. The Mississauga Steelheads will begin their 2012/2013 season as training camp opens at the Hershey Centre on August 20th.
