Akron, Ohio - A five-run sixth inning capped off by a three-run home run from Jordan Lennerton helped the Erie SeaWolves (38-38) earn their seventh straight road victory in an 8-5 win against the Akron Aeros Wednesday afternoon at Canal Park.
Nick Weglarz put the Aeros on the board with a two-run home run to right field in the first inning to give Akron an early lead.
Tony Plagman broke a month-long home run slump as he blasted a two-run shot into the right field bleachers during the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at two. It was Plagman's first home run since he hit for the cycle on May 22 and his eighth homer of the season.
The SeaWolves took the lead in the top of the fifth inning as Plagman drew a bases loaded walk to bring home Nick Castellanos. The Aeros re-gained the lead in the bottom half of the inning after Thomas Neal hit a two-run double to make it 4-3, Akron.
The sixth inning proved to be the deciding inning for Erie, who batted around and plated five runs to take a lead they would never give up. Starter Steven Wright left after putting the first two batters on base to start the inning, making way for tall Dutch reliever Loek van Mil. Jamie Johnson laced a single to right field to score Corey Jones and tie the game. Niuman Romero followed by executing a perfect bunt to score Luis Sanz and put the SeaWolves back in front.
After Castellanos drew a walk, it set the stage for Lennerton, who hit his 15th home run of the season to break the game wide open. Lennerton drove a fastball to straightaway center just over the home run line to give Erie an 8-4 lead. Lennerton's 15 homers are second in the Eastern League.
The Aeros could only muster one more run in the seventh as the SeaWolves held on for their second straight 8-5 win in Akron, and their seventh road win in a row to move back to .500 in the Eastern League standings.
Lennerton went 3-for-5 for the SeaWolves, who also had multi-hit games from Johnson (3-for-4), Castellanos (2-for-4) and Jones (2-for-4). Starter Kelvin De La Cruz (5-7) settled down after a rough beginning and pitched five innings, giving up four runs and striking out three to earn the victory. Michael Morrison threw three innings of solid relief as he gave up a run on one hit, and struck out four with great use of his breaking ball. Bruce Rondon earned his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
Wright (6-5), who entered the game with the best ERA in the Eastern League, took the loss after giving up five runs and eight hits in five innings. The SeaWolves continue their four-game series with Akron Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Fans can listen to all the action on Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 The Fan or online at SeaWolves.com.
