Curve Thunderstruck in Doubleheader Sweep

Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - Doubleheaders continued to be an issue for the Curve on Wednesday night as they were swept in a twinbill by the Trenton Thunder in front of 4,815 on hand at Peoples Natural Gas Field. A close first game turned ugly as the Thunder plated nine runs across the fifth and sixth innings for an eventual 10-2 win. In the second game, Altoona was shutout for the seventh time of the season with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Yankees' Double-A affiliate.

Phil Irwin (0-4) got the nod in the first game for the Curve and pitched a scoreless first before allowing a run in the top of the second. The Curve had an immediate answer in the bottom of the inning in the form of Quincy Latimore's fifth home run of the season and after two the game was tied at one.

That's where it stayed until the fifth when a two-run homer by Yadil Mujica, his first of the year, broke the deadlock and put the Thunder up, 3-1. A run scored later in the inning on an RBI single by David Adams to run the advantage to four but once again the Curve had an answer.

Jeremy Farrell led off the bottom half of the frame with a single and scored two batters later when Elevys Gonzalez singled into right field to make it a 4-2 game.

A two-run deficit is as close as the Curve would come the rest of the way as the Thunder plated six runs in the sixth inning off reliever Logan Kensing. Kensing walked three batters and allowed three hits, including a three-run homer by Jose Gil. He left with the bases loaded and gave the baseball to Mike Colla, who permitted a bases-clearing double by Zoilo Almonte to run the Thunder lead to 10-2.

Hoping to rebound in the second game, the Curve once again fell behind and were unable to catch up. Tim Alderson (3-3) pitched well in the game, allowing two runs on seven hits across his six innings of work but the Altoona offense mustered just three hits.

Trenton's runs, which came in the fourth and the sixth innings, were more than enough for Vidal Nuno (2-1), who pitched 5.1 innings and struck out four. He turned things over to Kelvin Perez for the final 1.2 innings for his second save of the season.

Altoona was held to a total of seven hits combined between the two games on Wednesday night and no member of the Curve recorded a multi-hit game. Brock Holt, who singled in the second contest, was unable to do the same in the first game and saw his nine-game hitting streak come to a close.

Looking to salvage a series finale victory and avoid back-to-back series sweeps, the Curve (28-35) will meet up with the Thunder (37-26) for the final game of the series and the homestand beginning at 7 p.m. The game will be part of a jam-packed Thursday night at the ballpark that includes something for everyone top to bottom.

It is the first night of the Nittany Travel Summer Cruise Series with Mission: Impossible Night as we pay tribute to Tom Cruise's role as Ethan Hunt in the blockbuster action flick. To continue the impossible, the first 500 fans 21 and up will receive a Curve Puzzle Cube as they enter the ballpark on Thursday as part of the four-part Cruise Giveaway series. Fans must collect tomorrow's item plus three others and bring them back to the August 30th game in order to be entered for a chance to win one (1) cruise for two to the Caribbean thanks to Nittany Travel.

Report Card Night also comes to fruition on Thursday night as youngsters from around the area can bring in their end of the year report cards for one free Grandstand seat to Thursday night's game with Trenton. It'll also be Bedford County Night and another Thirsty ThursdayTM presented by Rocky 104.9 where fans can get $2 16oz. Miller Lite draft specials and half-priced regular sodas during the series finale.

On the diamond it will be LHP Nathan Baker (3-6, 5.18) looking to lead the Curve to the win column to snap a five-game losing streak. Trenton counters with RHP Adam Miller (0-1, 4.05) in the series finale at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

Gates will swing open at 6 p.m. while airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is slated for 6:30 p.m. For tickets and more information on the upcoming Curve schedule and promotions, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the box office windows at the ballpark.
