Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Des Moines, IA - Salvador Perez and Tony Abreu combined for five hits and six runs batted in as Omaha overpowered Iowa, 9-4, Tuesday afternoon in the second of three meetings at Principal Park. The Storm Chasers won their seventh straight to improve to 41-25 and widen their lead to 12 games over the Cubs in the American Conference North Division. Omaha has totaled 61 runs on 89 hits during the winning streak.
Tuesday's game started just like Monday night's contest when Irving Falu led off with a single, stole second base and scored on a Perez base hit. Abreu followed with an RBI single and came in to score, with Perez, on a triple by David Lough, who was then driven in by Anthony Seratelli's ground out that completed a five-run rally against Cubs starter Chris Volstad.
The Cubs broke through in the third with a run-scoring single from Alfredo Amezaga but the visitors countered in the fifth with a run-producing double by Abreu to push their advantage back to five. Volstad was charged with the first six runs on six hits, along with four walks, while fanning four over five frames and suffered his first loss at the Triple-A level this season.
Perez added a two-out, two-run single that was followed by another RBI double by Abreu in the sixth that lengthened the lead to 9-1 against Ryan Rowland-Smith. Perez has played in six games on his major league rehab assignment and is 12-for-27 (.444) with seven runs driven in.
Omaha starter Jake Odorizzi earned the win after giving up two runs on four hits across 5 1/3 innings. The young right-hander struck out seven and has now fanned 17 over his last 12 innings. Francisley Bueno tossed 2 2/3 scoreless frames in relief before yielding a two-run home run to Luis Valbuena in the ninth that accounted for the final margin.
The series wraps up Wednesday afternoon with left-hander Jonathan Sanchez against Iowa right-hander Rodrigo Lopez. Coverage of the game gets underway at 11:45 am and can be heard on 1180 Zone Two, The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
