Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA -The Cubs dropped their second straight game to the Storm Chasers, falling 9-4 Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park. The Iowa (29-37) starter struggled early for the second straight game. The Cubs' offense trailed by five before stepping foot in the batter's box. Chris Volstad suffered the loss, tossing 5.0 innings of six-run ball, surrendering six hits and four walks while fanning four.

Omaha (41-25) pounced on Volstad in the first, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring five runs on four hits. After allowing a leadoff single, the righty retired Robinson before surrendering a walk and four consecutive base knocks. David Lough capped the inning with a two-run triple that nestled in the right field corner.

The Florida native settled down, retiring 11 of his next 14 batters after Lough's triple. A leadoff walk in the fifth led to trouble for Volstad though, plating Omaha's sixth run on an RBI double later in the inning.

Ty Wright stayed hot, blooping an excuse-me double that dropped in shallow right between three Storm Chasers for the Cubs first base runner to lead off the third. Chris Esposito lined a single in the 5-6 hole to put runners on the corners with one down. Alfredo Amezaga poked a single that hugged the third base line to put Iowa on the board.

The Cubs could not keep the rally running stranding two ducks on the pond or get much more started off of Jake Odorizzi. The Omaha righty improved his perfect record, picking up his fourth win on the season after fanning seven Cubs in 5.1 innings. Francisley Bueno recorded the save after throwing 3.2 innings of two-run relief.

Ryan Rowland-Smith surrendered three two-out runs in the sixth, with Omaha bringing eight batters to the plate for the second time in the game. Michael Bowden pitched two perfect innings of relief, sitting the Storm Chasers down in order in the seventh and eighth while fanning two of the six batters he faced. Scott Maine tossed a scoreless ninth for Iowa. The southpaw has not allowed a run in nine straight appearances for a total of ten innings.

In his second game with Iowa, Geovany Soto took over designated hitting duties going 1-for-4, with a double off the top of the wall in left.

Blake Lalli entered the game for Rizzo in the sixth and knocked a sacrifice fly to right for Iowa's second run of the day. Luis Valbuena launched a two-run home run, his eighth of the season, to score Lalli and cut the Omaha lead to five, but the Cubs could not work any more ninth inning magic.

Iowa will look for their first win of this series with another noon start tomorrow. Brooks Raley, coming off a complete game shutout, will try to duplicate his previous performance when he takes the hill Wednesday against Omaha's Will Savage (8-3).The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 11:45 a.m.
