Round Rock Express News Release
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Brad Nelson's first-inning, two-run single sparked a 16-hit attack as the Round Rock Express defeated the Albuquerque Isotopes 9-2 in Tuesday night's Pacific Coast League action at Isotopes Park. The Express (28-38) snapped a seven-game losing streak, the longest by the Texas Rangers Triple-A affiliate since 2007. The Isotopes (37-29) ended a four-game winning streak.
Round Rock never relinquished the lead Nelson's double provided. Trent Oeltjen homered on the third pitch of the bottom of the first, but the Express responded with a three-run second, a three-run third and another run in the fourth. It was Round Rock's most productive offensive output since plating nine runs May 31 at Memphis.
Meanwhile, Express starter Derek Hankins (2-3) settled into a groove after Oeltjen's first-inning homer. In only his third start of the season, Hankins held the Isotopes to two runs on four hits and a walk over five innings with two strikeouts. He retired each of the final six batters he faced after Josh Fields' RBI double in the fourth. Mark Hamburger worked three scoreless innings on two hits and two walks with one strikeout, and Aaron Heilman worked a perfect ninth with one strikeout.
Luis Hernandez (3-for-5) was one of seven Express batters with multiple-hit games. Tommy Mendonca homered for the second consecutive game, and Mike Bianucci clubbed his team-leading 12th homer.
Julio Borbon was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, pushing his hitting streak to 21 games. His streak is one game shy of the franchise record established by Yangervis Solarte earlier this season. Borbon is 40-for-93 (.430) during the streak, which included a stint on the disabled list.
Albuquerque starter Michael Antonini (1-5) took the loss; he allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and no walks over two and one-third innings with four strikeouts.
Mendonca's homer started the three-run second. Hernandez later plated another run with an RBI groundout, and Borbon scored on a two-out error. Borbon's two-run double sparked the three-run third, which was capped by Leonys Martin's RBI single.Bianucci added a two-out solo homer in the fourth.
Fields and Scott Van Slyke both were 2-for-3, combining for four of Albuquerque's six hits; each had a double.
Round Rock and Albuquerque conclude their abbreviated three-game series Wednesday with an 8:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at Isotopes Park. Right-hander Greg Reynolds (4-5, 4.76 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, while right-hander Fernando Nieve (3-3, 7.19 ERA) is slated to go for the Isotopes.
