Tonight's Game-- The RedHawks will try to rebound after last night's disappointing loss in the ninth inning when they face New Orleans at 7 p.m. Paul Clemens goes for his sixth win in seven starts.
Last Night-- For the second time in three games, the Zephyrs were down to their final out, only to rally and beat the RedHawks in their final at-bat, coming away with a 4-3 victory. With a runner at second and two outs in the ninth, Scott Cousins kept the game alive with an infield single. After Cousins stole second and Mike Cervenak was intentionally walked, Nick Green delivered a game-winning, two-run single over Jake Goebbert's head in left field. After closing out 22 straight games for the RedHawks over the last two seasons, Jose Valdez (0-3) could not hold on in a second straight save opportunity. The RedHawks never trailed until the final play of the game. A Brandon Barnes sac fly in the third broke the scoreless tie to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. Angel Sanchez sent the first pitch of the fifth inning out of the yard for his fourth homer of the year, extending the lead to two runs. The Zephyrs awoke in the sixth, collecting three straight hits with one out to score twice. Still tied 2-2 in the eighth, Barnes delivered a two-out RBI single to give the RedHawks the lead and extend his hitting streak to 11 games. In his first start for the RedHawks, Armando Galarraga went 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks.
Tonight's Probable Pitchers-- Paul Clemens will shoot for his sixth win in his last seven starts...Clemens earend a victory over New Orleans last Thursday in OKC...He went five innings and allowed four runs, with three coming in his final frame...He has won five of his last six starts, posting a 4.30 ERA in the wins...Clemens' biggest struggle this season has been finding success on the road...In six starts away from OKC, Clemens is 2-3 with an 11.00 ERA...He's surrendered at least four runs in five of six road starts and at least seven runs three times...Overall he has allowed two runs or less in half of his 12 starts...Like Clemens, J.D. Martin has been a much better pitcher at home this season...In five starts at Zephyr Field, Martin is 2-0 with a 3.30 ERA...Each of his last three home starts have been quality starts and in his last home start against Albuquerque on June 1, Martin tossed seven scoreless innings...He was roughed up in Bricktown Thursday, when the RedHawks hung eight runs in 3.1 innings on him...He allowed two runs over his first three innings before allowing a seven-spot in the fourth...Martin is one of the better strike throwers in the league, as his 1.88 walks per nine ranks fifth-best.
Heartbreak City-- Last night the RedHawks lost for the fourth time this season when leading after eight innings, the most in the PCL. New Orleans had been 0-25 when trailing after eight until Saturday.
Streaks Snapped-- Until yesterday, the RedHawks had won each of their last seven series openers as well as each of their last three one-run games. They're now 12-10 in games decided by a single run.
Walking This Way-- The RedHawks pitching staff tied a season high for a nine-inning game with seven walks last night. In five games against the Zephyrs, they are averaging 5.2 walks per nine innings. Against the rest of the PCL, they only issue 2.7 walks per nine.
Leaving The Park-- After being held to no homers Friday and Saturday, the RedHawks have hit four homers the last two games. They lead the league with 76 for the season. Last year the team finished dead last with just 88 homers.
Barnes' Bat-- Outfielder Brandon Barnes has been hot since joining the RedHawks on May 27. He's hit safely in 13 of 14 games, and he is hitting .410 (16x39) with six RBIs during his current 11-game hitting streak. He is now tied with Justin Ruggiano for the longest hitting streak by a RedHawk this season.
Super Snyder-- Brad Snyder is currently on a season-best nine-game hitting streak, hitting .429 (15x35) with one home run and eight RBIs. He has also notched two hits in five of his last six games.
June Boon-- Angel Sanchez leads the team with a .467 average in June (14x30) and is third with nine RBIs. He's had a multi-hit game in four of his last six contests and has raised his season average by nearly 30 points since the calendar turned past May.
Hessman The Hammer-- Mike Hessman had his fifth multi-homer game of the season Sunday. He's left the yard seven times over his last seven games and ranks second in the PCL with 17 home runs. Hessman also is second in slugging percentage (.650) and averages one home run every 9.24 at-bats. He's already surpassed the 2011 team leader Koby Clemens, who hit 16 homers. His 346 career Minor League dingers are best among active players.
Outhitting Oddity-- The RedHawks have been outhit in 14 of their last 18 games.
Against the Zephyrs-- Tonight is the sixth of seven straight games these teams are playing against each other...They are also in a stretch where they square off in 16 of 35 games...Last season the RedHawks dropped nine of 15 against the Zephyrs, hitting just .229 and were shutout three times, but held their own winning three of seven at Zephyr Field...It's been an offensive series so far, with each team averaging over six runs per game...The RedHawks are hitting .329, and the Zephyrs have hit .304 as a team.
