Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
'Topes starter Fernando Nieve tossed 7.0 scoreless innings and was buoyed by three home runs as the Albuquerque Isotopes (34-28) blew out the Memphis Redbirds (22-39) 12-0 on Friday night at Isotopes Park. With the scoreless contest, three of the last four 'Topes victories have come by way of a shutout.
Nieve (3-3) delivered a standout performance through his season-high 7.0 innings of work, allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out a pair. The right-hander has been in the zone lately, allowing a combined four runs with a 2.00 ERA over his last three starts.
Albuquerque's bats were red-hot throughout the night, initially thanks to Scott Van Slyke, who ripped an RBI single in the first and blasted a two-run home run in the third to give the 'Topes a quick 3-0 edge. After Van Slyke's blast, Luis Cruz followed with a one-out single, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Tim Federowicz to make it 4-0, Albuquerque.
The Isotopes again dented the scoreboard three innings later with a five-run sixth that began with Federowicz drawing a leadoff walk and Aaron Miles ripping a double to left. Nieve helped his own cause by poking an RBI single to right that scored Federowicz and extended the 'Topes advantage 5-0. Matt Angle followed with a shot to second baseman Pete Kozma, who mishandled the ball for an error as Miles darted home to make the score 6-0. With runners on the corners, Jerry Sands destroyed a Clay Zavada offering over the left field wall to boost the 'Topes to a 9-0 lead.
The Isotopes continued the rout in the seventh as Trent Oeltjen and Federowicz were plunked back-to-back by Nick Greenwood, and Miles promptly followed by smashing his first dinger of the season to widen the gap 12-0. Miles finished the night 3-for-5 and a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
The huge cushion was far more than enough for 'Topes relievers Wil Ledezma, who pitched a scoreless eighth, and Josh Wall, who closed out the ninth for a 12-0 Isotopes shutout victory.
The 'Topes look to string together consecutive wins against the Redbirds tomorrow night. Isotopes right-hander Will Savage (7-3, 4.86) will square off against Redbirds southpaw John Gast (2-0, 4.37) in a 7:05 PM start from Isotopes Park.
The Isotopes seven-game homestand rolls on with an Elvis-themed fireworks extravaganza tomorrow night, followed by a skateboard deck giveaway on Sunday and 50-Cent hot dogs on Monday. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.abqisotopes.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
