WERNER WOES

After splitting both series last year in Werner Park's inaugural season, the Express have fallen on hard times amongst the corn fields of Papillion. Including the 2011 PCL American Conference Championship Series finale, Round Rock has lost seven consecutive games at Werner Park. In those games, the Express have been out-scored 48-27 and scored five or fewer runs in all but one game. In fact, Omaha is 11-3 against Round Rock since the beginning of last year's ACCS regardless of location.

GOOD TIMES ON BORBON STREAK

Julio Borbon is riding a 17-game hitting streak (.438, 32-for-73), his longest this season and Round Rock's fourth of at least 15 games. Borbon was not hampered by a disabled list stint; he was reactivated prior to Thursday's game and is 3-for-8 with a home run, two RBI and a double in two games. Thursday's two-hit game was his 10th multiple-hit outing during the streak "" the fourth in his last six games. He has a quintet of three-hit games, 11 RBI and 14 runs scored during the streak. Borbon also enjoyed an eight-game scoring streak and a six-game extra-base-hit streak during the 17-gamer. He has hit safely in 26 of his last 28 games (.392, 49-for-125) with 16 multiple-hit outings, six three-hit games, five home runs, 18 RBI, seven doubles, three triples, 20 runs scored and nine stolen bases. His average skyrocketed from .186 to .307 in that time. Borbon is hitting .424 (39-for-92) during innings three through six with five of his six home runs and 19 of his 26 RBI. However, he is hitting .216 (26-for-120) outside those innings, including a .161 mark (10-for-62) after the sixth inning. He is 3-for-9 with the bases loaded. Borbon has hit safely in 15 consecutive home games, the PCL's longest active streak and tied for the league's longest this season. He clubbed his sixth home run last night "" his most in a season since hitting six between Triple-A Oklahoma City (two) and the Rangers (four) in 2009. Borbon's career high for homers in a season is seven in 2008 between Class A-Advanced Bakersfield (two) and Double-A Frisco (five).

BRAD NELSON: ROAD WARRIOR

Brad Nelson snapped a 21-game road hitting streak last night in a pinch-hit role. It was the PCL's longest road streak this season; he hit .384 (33-for-86) during the streak with seven homers, 20 RBI, seven doubles and 27 runs scored. Nelson is hitting nearly than 100 points higher on the road (.331, 40-for-121) than at home (.235, 23-for-98). All seven of his homers and 23 of his 30 RBI were in road games, and his OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) is .984 on the road as opposed to .599 at The Dell Diamond. Nelson has not gone hitless in consecutive games regardless of location since a three-game spell April 19-21. He has hit safely in 35 of 40 games since, enjoying hitting streaks of 11, nine and eight games.

KATA KEY IN CLUTCH SITUATIONS

Matt Kata is hitting .476 (20-for-42) with runners in scoring position, delivering 29 RBI. He is even more deadly with runners in scoring position and two outs, going 8-for-15 (.533) with 16 RBI. Kata's grand slam May 31 at Memphis was Round Rock's first this season. He is 4-for-6 with a double and 11 RBI with the bases loaded, going 3-for-3 since delivering a game-winning, three-run double May 24 vs. Sacramento. Furthermore, Kata gets better as the game goes along, hitting .349 (37-for-106) after the third inning; he is 13-for-34 (.382) after the seventh inning with eight RBI. Kata snapped a 10-game hitting streak (.467, 21-for-45, two homers, 14 RBI) Tuesday night, going 0-for-4; it was his longest streak of the season. Nonetheless, he has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games (.407, 22-for-54) with two homers, 14 RBI, seven multiple-hit outings, three multiple-RBI games and five extra-base hits (three doubles). Kata is hitting .333 (34-for-102) since May 2, hitting safely in 19 of 23 starts.

CAPTAIN KIRKMAN

2010 Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year Michael Kirkman has re-established himself as one of the PCL's top starters over the past month. After starting the season in the bullpen, Kirkman slid into the Express rotation April 20. He has piggy-backed with Roy Oswalt in each of the right-hander's two starts with the Express. Kirkman worked three scoreless innings against Omaha in his first start, but was rocked for eight runs (seven earned) over 2.1 innings April 26 at Oklahoma City in his next start. However, Kirkman has been solid as a rock since the calendar flipped to May. He is 5-0 with a 3.41 ERA (14 ER/37.0 IP) in his last eight outings (six starts), holding the opponent to three or fewer earned runs in each appearance. Kirkman also has limited opponents to a .203 average (26-for-128) in that time with 9.00 strikeouts per nine innings (37 strikeouts). Opponents are 4-for-24 (.167) against Kirkman this season with runners in scoring position and two outs. However, they are 4-for-6 with the bases loaded.

JACKSON IN NEED OF SUPPORT

Zach Jackson tied the Express franchise record with 13 wins last season despite a 5.51 ERA. Round Rock supported Jackson to the tune of 6.17 runs per game in his 23 starts in 2011. This season, Jackson's ERA is significantly lower (4.48) but his record is just 2-6. That largely is because the Express have averaged just 3.36 runs per game in Jackson's 11 starts, scoring three or fewer runs eight times and fewer than three runs five times. Jackson yielded three or fewer earned runs in six of his seven starts since tossing six shutout innings in a win April 24 at New Orleans. However, he is 1-4 in those seven starts. Jackson surrendered one unearned run over six innings in his last start June 5 vs. Albuquerque; the Express were shutout 2-0.

GIMME FIVE

The Express are 20-4 when holding the opposition to fewer than five runs but 7-31 when allowing at least five runs. Two of Round Rock's four losses when holding the opponent to fewer than five runs came in the last 10 games (4-3, May 31 at Memphis; 2-0, June 5 vs. Albuquerque). The Express are 5-20 when scoring fewer than five runs; two of the five wins also were in the 10 games (3-0, June 1 at Memphis; 3-2, June 2 vs. Albuquerque).

KEY NUMBERS TELL THE STORY

Round Rock is 10-19 since blowing a 9-5 lead in the ninth inning May 9 at Salt Lake. The Express were 17-16 prior to that loss, the only point at which they were over .500 this season. Round Rock has been outscored 185-151 over the last 29 games, surrendering double-digit runs six times. Express pitchers have a 5.93 ERA (164 ER/249.0 IP) in that time. The staff has allowed at least one home run in 21 of the last 26 games (32 homers), including four grand slams. A closer look into the numbers shows the Express are hitting .188 (28-for-149) with runners in scoring position in the 19 losses and .423 (47-for-111) in the 10 wins. Conversely, opponents are hitting .324 (68-for-210) with runners in scoring position in the 19 Express losses and .145 (12-for-83) in Round Rock's 10 victories.

"HOME" RUNS SCARCE

In stark contrast to last season, The Dell Diamond has not been a launching pad for the Express. Round Rock averages 0.64 homers per game through 28 home dates this season (18 homers). The Express have not homered in nine of their last 11 home games. Conversely, Round Rock averages 1.42 homers in 33 road games (47 homers), including a season-high five May 8 at Salt Lake. The Express have homered in 17 of their last 21 road games, including streaks of seven and eight games. Round Rock has homered in all but eight road games this season, clubbing at least two homers 12 times. Meanwhile, the Express have four multiple-homer games at The Dell Diamond. Last season, Round Rock averaged 1.46 home runs per game at The Dell Diamond and 0.97 homers per game on the road. Teams have combined to score 9.29 runs per game at The Dell Diamond this season as opposed to the 11.90 average in 2011.

IT'S A LOADED QUESTION

Round Rock is hitting .338 (23-for-68) with the bases loaded. The Express are 13-for-30 (.433) with the bases loaded since May 21, collecting nine bases-loaded hits over the last eight games.
