Pedrotty Pitches Hawks Past Loons

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN - John Pedrotty tossed a career-high 7.2 innings and earned the win as the South Bend Silver Hawks (26-23) staved off the Great Lakes Loons (25-24) 5-3 to begin a four-game series at Dow Diamond. The left-hander also matched a season-high with seven strikeouts.

The Silver Hawks and Loons entered play in a three-way tie with the Bowling Green Hot Rods who played on the road against Fort Wayne. The Hot Rods beat the TinCaps, so South Bend and Bowling Green are tied for second place.

Pedrotty (2-3) earned the win for South Bend, allowing three runs - two earned - on four hits over 7.2 innings. The southpaw matched a season-high with seven strikeouts. Gustavo Gomez (4-4) took the loss for Great Lakes, allowing five earned runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. Kable Hogben recorded the final four outs of the game to notch his first save.

The Silver Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run from Gerson Montilla. It was Montilla's third long ball of the season, the second most among Silver Hawks. The Silver Hawks never trailed in the game.

Tom Belza finished 1-for-5 and singled in a pair of runs to punctuate a three-run fifth inning. Fidel Pena, Roidany Aguila and Montilla each recorded two hits for the Silver Hawks.

O'Koyea Dickson hit a solo home run to put the Loons on the board in the second inning. The Loons pulled to within two runs with a two-run seventh inning - Scott Schebler scored on a throwing error from Ender Inciarte and Jan Vasquez brought in another run with an RBI ground out. Dickson finished 2-for-3 to pace the Loons offense.

Pedrotty worked a three-up, three-down inning in the first, fifth and sixth innings. Inciarte went 0-for-4 and snapped his eight-game hitting streak. Ellison walked three times out of the leadoff spot.

Entering with two outs in the eighth inning, Hogben walked the first batter he faced, but proceeded to retire four in a row to close out the game.

The Silver Hawks and Loons continue the four-game series Sunday at Dow Diamond. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m. Jesse Darrah (4-2, 3.74) gets the start for South Bend and he will be opposed by right-hander Arismendy Ozoria (3-1, 4.74).
