GENEVA, Ill. - Doing all of their damage from the sixth inning on, the Kane County Cougars pulled off a 5-2 victory over the Clinton LumberKings on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark to open a three-game series.

Clinton (12-20) grabbed the early advantage in the top of the first with three consecutive singles against Kellen Moen. Jabari Blash's base hit brought home Steven Baron to put the LumberKings on top. In the fifth, Clinton took a 2-0 lead with Jamal Austin singling home Bryan Brito. Those were the only blemishes for Moen, who lasted six innings and struck out three.

Lane Adams put the Cougars (16-17) on the board in the bottom of the sixth as his infield single knocked in Danny Mateo. Stephen Landazuri exited after six frames and gave way to Kyle Hunter (0-2). Tim Ferguson doubled off Hunter and advanced to third when Blash dropped a Jin-Ho Shin liner in right. Mateo made the LumberKings pay for the blunder as a base hit to left scored both Ferguson and Shin, giving the Cougars a 3-2 cushion.

An error and two walks filled the bases for the Cougars in the bottom of the eighth with Shin punching a base hit to left, scoring Adams and Murray Watts. Mike Giovenco (2-2) tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief of Moen while Nick Graffeo (S, 7) worked around a couple of baserunners in the ninth inning, coaxing Brito into a game-ending double play.
