Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Marcus Walden tossed five scoreless innings and the Lansing Lugnuts (22-10) ended their longest losing streak of the season - two games - with a 7-3 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (17-16) on Wednesday night on Jackson Field.
The Hot Rods stranded 11 runners on base in the game and finished a remarkable 2-for-19 with runners in scoring position.
Coming off a two-inning outing at Great Lakes, Walden (Win, 2-1) rebounded to limit the Hot Rods to just two hits and two walks while striking out four.
A Kevin Pillar two-run single in the third against Bowling Green starter Trevor Shull (Loss, 0-1) gave the Lugs the lead for good, with Lansing tacking on four more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for good measure.
Hot Rods left fielder Josh Sale aided the home team's cause, losing two fly balls in the high sky; one led to a Carlos Perez two-run double in the fifth, the other to an Andy Burns leadoff double in the sixth.
Tyler Ybarra relieved Walden in the sixth and gave up a pair of runs in one inning-plus of work before departing two batters into the seventh due to injury.
Blake McFarland (Save, 1) recorded the final nine outs of the game to finish the Lansing victory, striking out four and allowing a run on two hits and two walks.
In the winning cause, both Perez and Hobson notched a pair of hits for the Lugnuts, while leadoff hitter Kenny Wilson drew two walks and scored two runs.
Lansing also stole four more bases in the game, increasing its league-best total to 58 thefts.
The Lugnuts and Hot Rods play the second game in the three-game set at Cooley Law School Stadium on a Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday featuring $2 beer/soda specials and a postgame concert with "The Smoking Jackets."
The 7:05 p.m. pitching matchup sees Lansing left-hander Justin Nicolino (1-0, 0.00) oppose Bowling Green southpaw Ryan Carpenter (4-1, 2.57). Tickets are available online at the team website at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
