Kernels blast Bees, 14-2

BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Kernels set a new season-high in runs scored and tied a season-high in hits as they blasted the Burlington Bees 14-2 at Community Field on Wednesday night. The Kernels scored 12 of their 14 runs in the game's first 3 innings. Cedar Rapids had 14 hits on the night.

The Kernels sent nine hitters to the plate in the 1st inning and scored three times. A RBI double by Ryan Jones scored Kevin Moesquit, and Matt Scioscia's 2-RBI single scored Kaleb Cowart and Jones to give the Kernels and early 3-0 lead.

Burlington's Sean Jamieson tripled to lead off the bottom of the 1st inning and scored one batter later on a RBI sacrifice fly by Chih-Fang Pan, cutting the Kernels lead to 3-1.

In the 2nd inning, the Kernels sent eight batters to the plate and took advantage of three Bees errors to score five runs and take a commanding 8-1 lead. Jones doubled home Moesquit and Trevor Hairgrove with his second RBI double of the night. Cowart scored on a wild pitch by Bees starter Jonathan Joseph. RBI groundouts by Chevy Clarke and Scioscia scored Jones and Andy Workman, respectively.

In the 3rd inning, the Kernels kept the onslaught going as eight more hitters came to the dish and the visitors plated four more runs, taking a 12-1 lead. Cowart's 2-RBI double scored Wendell Soto and Moesquit. A RBI single by Jones scored Hairgrove. Andy Workman drove home Cowart when he reached on a fielder's choice.

Burlington's Chih-Fang Pan homered to lead off the 6th inning, cutting the Kernels lead to 12-2.

The Kernels did not score again until the 9th inning when Kaleb Cowart blasted a 2-run home run to deep left center, extending the Kernels lead to 14-2.

Mike Clevinger (1-0) started and went seven innings, picking up the win. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out six and walking three. Frank De Jiulio and Logan Odom both pitched scoreless innings in relief, allowing no hits.

Jonathan Joseph (0-2) started and took the loss for the Bees. He went 4.2 innings and allowed 12 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits. He struck out 2 and walked two.

The Kernels continue the series at Burlington on Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m.
