Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - On Monday, Noel Cuevas looked to be the hero of the night for the Great Lakes Loons. His great catch in the sixth inning preserved a tie score, and his solo homer in the seventh gave the Loons the lead. But South Bend rallied to win that game, negating Cuevas' heroics.
But on Tuesday night, Cuevas lined a single to right field in the top of the ninth inning with the bases loaded to drive home the go-ahead run, and the Loons knocked off the Silver Hawks 7-5 at Coveleski Stadium.
The Loons took three-out-of-four from the Silver Hawks to improve to 18-14 on the season.
Pedro Guerrero finished with three hits, including his first home run of the season. He also laid down a key sacrifice bunt for the Loons in the ninth inning.
With the Loons trailing 3-0, Guerrero homered off SB starter Archie Bradley leading off the third, the first professional homer surrendered by the Diamondbacks' No. 2 prospect. Later in the inning, Silver Hawks catcher Tyson Van Winkle allowed two unearned runs to score when he fired high down to first base on a strikeout that bounced into home plate. That play tied the game at 3-3.
After South Bend reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third on a double by Marc Bourgeois, the Loons took their first lead with two in the fourth. Guerrero singled home Boudreaux to tie the score. Then after two Bradley wild pitches, Jesus Arredondo grounded to second to bring home the go-ahead run.
But the Silver Hawks tied the score in the eighth with Ender Inciarte driving home a run on an infield single.
In the ninth, Pratt Maynard singled and took second on a missed catch error by shortstop Josh Parr on a sac bunt attempt by Boudreaux. Guerrero's bunt moved both runners into scoring position, and Arredondo was intentionally walked to load the bases. Reliever D.J. Johnson (1-2) worked ahead of Cuevas 0-2, but Cuevas hit a line drive into right to break a 5-5 tie. Later in the inning, O'Koyea Dickson walked with the bases loaded to make it 7-5.
Yimi Garcia (2-0), who surrendered a run in the eighth, worked a scoreless ninth, despite giving up two hits to begin the inning. Garcia recorded all six of his outs on strikeouts. Loons starter Jose Dominguez surrendered three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Ex-starter Matt Laney made his relief debut with 1 1/3 scoreless frames. Juan Noriega did not allow a run and just one hit in two innings.
Bradley finished the game with five runs allowed (three earned) in four innings. He struck out four, walked two, and threw four wild pitches for South Bend. Willy Paredes and Keith Hessler combined for four shutout relief innings.
The Loons (18-14) face the Tigers' affiliate, the West Michigan Whitecaps (16-16), for the first time this season on Wednesday. Game time is 6:35pm ET from Comstock Park, MI. Right-hander Ryan O'Sullivan (1-2, 3.32) will get his first start of the season. He will be opposed by righty Tommy Collier (2-1, 2.12). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
