Burlington Bees News Release

BURLINGTON, Iowa (5/9/12) - Over the course of a long baseball season dreams will come true, wishes will be granted, and nightmares will haunt a team from time to time. The Burlington Bees (15-17) dealt with a nightmare through the first three innings and lost 14-to-2 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (15-18).

Many times a perfect game is defined by an amazing play to save the perfection; sometimes a great comeback can be traced back to one at bat late in a game; and sometimes a terrible play can set the mood for an even worse night. Jonathan Joseph started for the Bees having pitched his best baseball in his previous two outings. But the first play of the game resulted in a throwing error by B.A. Vollmuth that flew ten feet over Douglas Landaeta's head at first base.

At that point nobody at Community Field knew how well the error forecasted the rest of the game, but the error only contributed to the worst start to a Bees game all year. Joseph gave up a total of 12 runs through the first three innings. His command was absent and his support started the game in shambles. The infield committed three errors, with Vollmuth owning two and the usually sure-handed short stop Sean Jamieson committing another. Joseph also had a throwing error and a wild pitch that allowed a run to score.

Somehow the details of the first three innings actually make them look worse. The leadoff man reached base and scored in all three innings. The Kernels loaded the bases twice in the first inning and started the second and third inning by loading the bases before hitting into an out. Joseph pitched a total of 4.2 innings and surrendered 12 runs (five earned) on ten hits and two walks. Joseph (0-2) took the loss and the Kernels' Michael Clevinger (1-0) earned his first win.

The offense never fought back in game one despite a leadoff triple by Sean Jamieson in the bottom of the first and an RBI sacrifice fly from Chih-Fang Pan that followed Jamieson's hit. The Bees only had three hits in the game and the five through nine hitters in the line up didn't have a hit in the game. Pan offered some excitement when he pulled a ball down the right field line and over the tall wall in right for his first home run of the year. Pan drove in the only two runs the Bees scored on Wednesday night.

The Bees play game two with Cedar Rapids at 11:30 a.m. The day game celebrates Kids Day at the ballpark. For tickets or information, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
