Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES -- The Cubs came out on top of a pitchers duel, defeating the Zephyrs 1-0 to split the home stand at Principal Park. Brett Jackson scored the game's only run on a balk by starter Alex Sanabia in the eighth inning. The Cubs (12-18) finished their third home stand with a win, tying the season series with New Orleans (17-14) at two games apiece.
Casey Coleman and Alex Sanabia put on a pitching clinic for Monday's matinee. The two starters combined for sixteen strikes with just four hits and one run. Coleman fanned a career-high nine batters on the afternoon, surrendering just two hits and one walk over seven stellar innings of work. The dueling righties made quick work of the opposing offenses, setting a franchise record for time of game, going just one hour and fifty minutes.
The Florida native helped his own cause, collecting the Cubs' first of only two hits on the afternoon, breaking up Sanabia's perfect game bid in the sixth inning with a double off the top of the right field wall. 3B Josh Vitters was the only other Cub with a hit on the day, lining a single in the eighth. That base knock set up the run-scoring balk, sending Brett Jackson to third after he reached on a leadoff walk.
Sanabia suffered the tough luck loss, surrendering just two hits and one run on the balk. The righty fanned seven and his only walk came around to score. LHP Scott Maine combined with Coleman for the two hit shutout, tossing two scoreless innings to pick up the win.
Iowa now heads on the road to California to play eight games in nine days against the Fresno Grizzlies and the Sacramento River Cats. RHP Rodrigo Lopez will take the hill, looking to make it two in a row for the Cubs tomorrow in Fresno.
