Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Albuquerque Isotopes (11-11) received a virtuoso performance from starter Mike Parisi but it wasn't enough as the New Orleans Zephyrs (14-7), led by their starter Alex Sanabia, managed to hang on for a 2-1 win Friday night at Zephyr Field. After rattling off seven straight wins, the streaky "ËTopes have now dropped three in a row.
Parisi was flat-out masterful for Albuquerque, allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out seven in seven brilliant innings of work. The right-hander's only blemish came in the second, when Bryan Peterson led off the frame with a single, stole second, and scored on a one-out single by Matt Dominguez to put the Z's on top 1-0. After the Dominguez base knock, Parisi retired the next 12 batters in a row and faced the minimum from the third through the seventh.
The one-run lead held thanks to the work of Sanabia, who worked seven innings of his own, allowing the "ËTopes just five hits while walking none and striking out seven. From the second to the fifth, Sanabia retired 10 Isotopes in a row.
New Orleans added an insurance run in the eighth on reliever Shane Lindsay, who was making his "ËTopes debut. With one out, Lindsay hit Sergio Pedroza with a pitch and subsequently uncorked a wild pitch that allowed the runner to scamper into second. After Kevin Mattison was also hit by a pitch, Lindsay coaxed a fly-out before Scott Cousins slapped a two-out single to center, sending home Pedroza and doubling the Z's advantage to 2-0.
The insurance run proved costly, as Albuquerque mounted a last-gasp rally in the ninth off Zephyrs closer Sandia Rosario. Josh Fields and Scott Van Slyke led off the frame with back-to-back singles, setting up Tim Federowicz, who three batters later roped a two-out single to center that plated Fields and trimmed the deficit to 2-1. That's where the rally would end, however, as Rosario struck out Luis Cruz to end the game and preserve the 2-1 New Orleans triumph.
Sanabia (3-0) earned the victory for the Z's while Parisi (1-1) suffered the tough-luck loss, his first of the season. Rosario (8) nailed down his PCL-leading eighth save of the campaign.
Albuquerque will look to get back on track on Saturday behind right-hander Will Savage (4-0, 2.41), who will put his perfect record on the line against New Orleans lefty Brad Hand (2-1, 3.63) in 5:05 PM MT start from Zephyr Field.
After a series in New Orleans, the Isotopes are back home this Monday, April 30 for a loaded homestand that kicks off with the first of three 50-Cent Hot Dog Nights and includes back-to-back weekend fireworks. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.abqisotopes.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
