Success In Numbers

February 13, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL) Hershey Bears

The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club picked up five out of a possible six points this weekend, beginning with a 2-1 win on Friday at Syracuse. Cody Eakin scored a power-play goal while Garrett Mitchell's second-period strike held up as the winner. Braden Holtby earned the win with 25 saves. Eakin scored the go-ahead goal with 2:01 left to play on Saturday night against Worcester, after the Sharks' Jack Combs and Chris Bourque traded first-period power-play goals. Tim Kennedy tied the game shortly after to force a shootout, which featured Dany Sabourin and Worcester's Tyson Sexsmith stopping their first six opponents. Brodie Reid beat Sabourin in the seventh round, good enough to give the Sharks a 3-2 win. HERSHEY rebounded in grand fashion on Sunday, defeating their rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins by a 5-1 score. Ryan Potulny scored two goals and an assist, Jacob Micflikier tallied two power-play goals to take the league lead in the statistic, Chris Bourque tied for the AHL scoring lead with three assists, and Mitchell added his second goal of the weekend. Holtby turned aside 34 shots in the win. The BEARS begin a season-long five-game road trip beginning this Friday at Providence.

Mitchell's the Man:

Rookie RW Garrett Mitchell contributed in a big way this weekend, scoring his first game-winning goal on Friday at Syracuse and then adding another strike on Sunday against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Two of Mitchell's five goals have come against the Penguins.

Mitchell & Mates Meshing:

Mitchell's linemates Andrew Carroll and D.J. King have also cashed in, with all three combining for three goals, five assists and a plus-9 rating in their last four games together.

Top Offense Goes D:

The BEARS' top-ranked offense (3.60 goals/game) got help from defense and goaltending last weekend, allowing just four regulation goals over three games. The BEARS' Friday night victory at Syracuse was the team's first this season when scoring just two goals.

Holtby Moving Up:

Braden Holtby allowed just one goal in each of his weekend starts, pushing his goals-against average down to 2.55 (16th in AHL). He is now tied for fifth in the AHL with 18 wins.
