Monsters Lose Despite Doubling Rochester in Shots

Despite outshooting their opponent 34-17 and Hugh Jessiman's team-leading 12th goal of the season, the Lake Erie Monsters (13-15-1-1) were unable to overcome the Rochester Americans (13-12-4-1), falling 4-1 on Wednesday night at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester.

The Americans converted on their first two power play opportunities in the first period with goals coming 1:24 apart. Mark Voakes scored on a rebound at the 12:25 mark for the Americans, and Dennis Persson scored on a slap shot from the top of the right circle to assure Rochester of a 2-0 lead after one period.

Following a second period that didn't yield any scoring, the Monsters solved Rochester goalie Drew MacIntyre with a wrist shot along the ice at 11:52 of the third period on the power play. Jessiman performed a series of moves to the high slot area before unleashing the shot. Cameron Gaunce assisted on the goal.

At 14:12, Evan Rankin attempted a centering pass from behind the Monsters net, and the puck took a favorable Rochester bounce and slipped across the goal line to regain the two-goal lead for the Americans.

Marcus Foligno scored an empty-net goal with 23 seconds left to seal the victory for Rochester, making the score 4-1.

Cedrick Desjardins stopped 13 of 16 shots in net for the Monsters; he falls to 7-5-1. MacIntyre stopped 33 of 34 shots in the win for Rochester; he is 5-9-1.

The Monsters will be off until next Wednesday, December 28th at 7:00 PM when they host the Grand Rapids Griffins at Quicken Loans Arena.

NOTES: The Monsters are 0-2-0-0 against Rochester this season... In their two meetings against the Americans, Rochester goalies have stopped 67 of 69 shots against... Greg Mauldin has 13 points in his last 13 games played for the Monsters... Cedrick Desjardins has given up three goals just three times in 13 starts this season; he has not surrendered more than 3 in any game this season... Hugh Jessiman has three goals over his last five games, and leads the Monsters with power play goals on the season; no other Monsters player has more than three power play goals.
