Ottawa, Ontario - The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the defending Calder Cup Champion Binghamton Senators by a score of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario. Alexander Avtsin recorded three assists while Frederic St. Denis scored the game-winner and added an assist.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring on a four-on-four goal by Brian Willsie at 6:57 of the first period. Willsie flew down the wing on a two-on-two rush and snapped a shot over the glove of Binghamton Senators starting goaltender Robin Lehner and the puck went top corner just under the crossbar.
The 'Dogs added a second tally at 6:56 of the middle frame on a power play goal by Joonas Nattinen. After the puck was bouncing around in front of the net, the puck came out to Nattinen who batted it out of the air and it fluttered by Lehner and in the net. Hamilton extended their lead at 12:06 of the second stanza on a five-on-three power play goal by Frederic St. Denis. After picking up the puck at the point from a clearing attempt, St. Denis launched a rocket right into the roof of the Binghamton net past Lehner.
The Senators got on the board at 15:59 of the second period on a power play goal by Patrick Wiercioch. After receiving the puck from Nikita Filatov, Wiercioch raced into the Hamilton zone on the right wing side, then weaved his way through a few defenders to get to the net and shoveled puck under Bulldogs starting goaltender Robert Mayer's right pad.
The Bulldogs took their second three-goal lead of the game on a marker by Andreas Engqvist at 1:06 of the third frame. Alexander Avtsin dropped the puck to Engqvist who shot the puck between the legs of Lehner from a sharp angle.
Binghamton cut the lead to two on a goal by Jim O'Brien at 1:43 of the third period. O'Brien gobbled up a loose puck in front of the net and put it under Mayer and in the back of the net.
Hamilton scored their fifth goal of the game at 5:07 of the third stanza on a goal by Louis Leblanc. After receiving the puck from Avtsin, Leblanc deked backhand to forehand and slid the puck past Lehner.
