Intimidators Bats Block out the Suns

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Aug. 18, 2011) -- The same offense that eluded the Kannapolis Intimidators over the previous series erupted for 12 runs on 16 hits in a route of the second place Hagerstown Suns, 12-4, on Thursday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in the first game of a four-game series. The Intimidators increased their 2nd Half Northern Division lead back to 2.0 games over the Suns with the win, snapped Hagerstown's seven-game win streak.

Carlos Sanchez singled in the first inning, and Dan Black cashed him in from first with his league-leading 35th double with two outs.

The Suns jumped in front in the top of the second on a run-scoring single by Chris Currin, who then came home on Michael Taylor's double. David Freitas drove in Adrian Sanchez in the top of the third to give the Suns a 3-1 lead.

Kannapolis exploded in the bottom of the third inning for six runs, powered by six singles and aided by two Hagerstown errors. Five of the first six Intimidators hitters singled in the inning, the exception was an error by shortstop Jason Martinson that allowed Marcus Semien to reach base. Black drove in his league-leading 88th RBI, following by RBI singles from Trayce Thompson, Ross Wilson and Keenyn Walker. Collin Kuhn added an RBI-groundout, and another run scored on an overthrow error from the outfield.

Suns starter Matt Grace (11-6) was chased from the game after 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (three earned) on eight hits in a losing effort.

Adrian Sanchez led off the top of the fifth a home run to pull the Suns back within three, but the Intimidators got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Miguel Gonzalez doubled home Thompson for his league-leading 83rd run scored.

Phil Negus worked five innings for the Intimidators in his ninth start of the season, allowing four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Negus improved to 4-0, and the Intimidators improved to 9-0 in his starts. Paul Burnside made his first appearance in more than a month after a stint on the disabled list and tossed a scoreless sixth inning. Justin Collop earned a save (1) with three scoreless innings to finish the game.

Kannapolis added two more runs in the sixth on an RBI-double from Thompson and an RBI-single from Ross Wilson, stretching the lead to 10-4. In the eighth, Ravelo and Wilson drove a pair of runs to stretch the Intimidators lead to 12-4.
