Hoover, AL - Seth Loman went 3-for-5 with 1 home run, 2 RBI and 1 run scored as the Birmingham Barons (18-29, 58-59) lapped the Chattanooga Lookouts (27-19, 62-54), 7-4, Thursday night in front of 3,404 fans at Chattanooga's AT&T Park.
Birmingham captured a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning when Christian Marrero laced a leadoff double and raced home on Jon Gilmore's RBI double to center field. Seth Loman followed with his 13th home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right-center field wall. Jake Oester and Kenny Williams, Jr. collected back-to-back singles before Jason Bour reached on a fielding error by Lookouts shortstop Elian Herrera that loaded the bases. Greg Paiml lifted a sacrifice fly that drove in Oester. A RBI double by Alden Carrithers knocked home the fifth run of the inning.
Travis Denker collected a one-out double and scored on a RBI double by Corey Smith as the Lookouts narrowed the gap to four in the bottom of the fourth inning, 5-1.
A leadoff triple by Alex Castellanos in Chattanooga's half of the sixth inning before Denker lifted a sacrifice fly that plated Castellanos and reduced the Barons lead to three, 5-2.
Smith drew a leadoff walk and trotted home on Brian Cavazos-Galvez's tenth home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning that brought Lookouts within one, 5-4.
The Barons opened a 7-4 lead in the ninth inning when Carrithers reached on a fielding error by Herrera and advanced to second on a groundout. After a walk to Marrero and Carrithers stealing third base, Jon Gilmore cracked a RBI single that plated Carrithers and advanced Marrero to third. Oester added a RBI single that drove in Marrero for the game's final run.
Hector Santiago (5-4) earned the victory for the Barons as the southpaw tossed 7.0 IP with four earned runs on 6 hits, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. Miguel Socolovich (S, 1) was handed the save when the right-hander hurled 2.0 scoreless IP with two strikeouts.
Lookouts starter Will Savage (12-4) garnered the loss when the righty surrendered five runs (four earned) on 11 hits and two strikeouts in 4.0 IP.
The Barons and Lookouts tackle game three of the five-game series Friday night at 6:15 p.m. (CDT) at Chattanooga's AT&T Park. Birmingham hands the ball to left-hander Charlie Leesman (8-4, 4.65) while Chattanooga counters with Michael Antonini (9-8, 3.83).
