Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive (57-48, 19-16) picked up their third victory in a row over the Charleston RiverDogs (41-64, 15-20), upping their overall win streak to five games, behind starting pitcher Brandon Workman's (3-6) stellar performance. Both teams scored a run in the first inning, then Charleston threatened late but Greenville was able to hold on for a 4-3 win.
Charleston started the game with two quick hits which produced their first run of the game. After a leadoff single by Jose Toussen, Charleston second baseman Anderson Feliz hit a double to left field which, which also included an errant throw from Brandon Jacobs, allowing Toussen to score. Once Workman got out of the first inning he was on cruise control, only giving up two more hits in his last six innings of work.
The former 2nd round draft pick threw 86 pitches in seven incredible innings of work, in what was one of his better starts in a Drive uniform. The right-hander struck out five Charleston batters, while issuing just two free passes and scattered four hits over his start.
Charle Rosario came in to relieve Workman and hung onto pick up his fourth save of the year. He pitched a 1,2,3 eighth inning before running into some trouble in the final frame of the night. Rosario loaded the bases and gave up two runs before recording the final out of the game.
The Drive scored in the bottom of the first inning when speedster Felix Sanchez leadoff with a single. Sanchez stole second base for his 43rd steal, moving him into second place on the all time Drive list. He was then brought home on a Christian Vazquez single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1.
Xander Bogaerts was the star of the show offensively, with his two towering home runs over the Green Monster . The eventual game winning run came in the sixth when Drew Hedman hit a single, stole second then scored on a triple down the right field line from Wilfred Pichardo.
The Drive will look to finish off their second sweep of the season when they conclude their homestand on Sunday with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Keith Couch (4-3, 3.09 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, while Charleston counters with right-hander Jose A. Ramirez (5-4, 4.22 ERA).
Tomorrow is also Mill League Night at Fluor Field, in which the Drive will wear throwback uniforms honoring the Upstate's rich textile league baseball history.
