Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive (56-48, 18-16) must be on Santa Claus' "nice" list, as they rode stellar pitching to a 4-1 win over the Charleston RiverDogs (41-63, 15-19) on "Christmas in July" night at Fluor Field on Friday.
Tyler Lockwood (5-6) picked up the win in relief for the Drive after throwing 2-1/3 scoreless innings while striking out four. Kyle Stroup started on the bump and was very effective, as he punched out seven RiverDogs hitters in 4-2/3 innings while only allowing a single run. Michael Gleason threw the final two frames to record his third save of the year.
Charleston struck first with a run in the top of the third, but that was all they could muster on the evening. After Stroup issued a leadoff walk to Garrison Lassiter, Jose Mojica doubled to left, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Two batters later, Anderson Feliz's groundball was booted by Drive second baseman Sean Coyle, scoring Lassiter. Stroup then collected a strikeout and a groundout to escape further damage.
The Drive answered back with a single run in the bottom half. Carson Blair drew a one-out walk, and Felix Sanchez dropped a terrific bunt past the pitcher's mound for a single. After a flyout, Brandon Jacobs lined a single into center field, plating Blair to tie the game at one.
Greenville took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when Coyle launched an offering from RiverDogs starter Steve Evarts (1-4) over the wall in center for a solo homer.
The Drive added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning against Charleston reliever Tommy Kahnle. Sanchez drew a leadoff walk, and stole second and third during Coyle's at-bat. After Coyle struck out, Jacobs walked to put runners on the corners. Henry Ramos followed with a single through the middle, bringing Sanchez home and advancing Jacobs to third. Ramos swiped second base, and Xander Bogaerts brought in the final run of the night with a bloop double to shallow right.
Bogaerts and Coyle each collected a pair of hits for Greenville. Lassiter was the only Charleston hitter with two hits.
The Drive and RiverDogs continue their four-game series on Saturday with first pitch set for 7:05 PM from Fluor Field. Right-hander Brandon Workman (2-6, 4.25 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, while Charleston counters with right-hander Shane Greene (3-10, 4.06 ERA).
Fans will get to walk the red carpet as they enter the ballpark on Saturday, with a tribute to Oscars and the greatest movies ever made.
