Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - When the Augusta GreenJackets need to stop a losing skid they can call on Shawn Sanford to pull them out of their funk. Sanford fired eight magnificent innings as the GreenJackets picked up their fourth shutout win of the season - a 5-0 triumph over the Hickory Crawdads on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Sanford faced four hitters in each of the first two innings, and then faced the minimum in each of the next six with baserunners coming off the basepaths on a double play ball in the fourth and in the seventh when Tomas Telis was thrown out at third for the Crawdads trying to stretch a double into a triple. Sanford (8-6) picked up his fifth consecutive win with his eight scoreless innings, surrendering three hits and striking out two.

The GreenJackets took an early lead off Hickory starter Joe Van Meter in the second inning. With one out, Rafael Rodriguez walked to put a man on for Jeff Arnold. The GreenJackets catcher drilled a line shot to left that just cleared the fence and wrapped inside the foul pole for a two-run home run - Arnold's fourth of the season - to give the GreenJackets a 2-0 lead.

Van Meter limited the GreenJackets to just two hits and a walk in his final four innings, as Augusta's 2-0 lead held until the eighth because the Crawdads managed to get just one man in scoring position after the second inning. Van Meter (5-3) took somewhat of a hard-luck loss, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings with three walks and three strikeouts.

Augusta strengthened their lead in the eighth, sending eight to the plate and picking up three more runs. Rodriguez drove in one with an RBI single while Arnold singled home two more, giving him four RBI's in the game and growing Augusta's lead to 5-0.

Drew Bowlin put the first two runners on base in the ninth but got out of trouble thanks to a pair of flyouts and a called third strike to end the game.

The GreenJackets send Taylor Rogers (7-9, 2.82) to the mound on Saturday in an attempt to make it two in a row over the Crawdads. Hickory counters with Cody Buckel (4-3, 2.30) on Halloween in July night. GreenJackets staffers will be dressed in costume and any fan that shows up in costume will be given a free general admission ticket to the game. It's also a Sparkling Saturday with postgame fireworks courtesy NBC Augusta, MCG Health and Kicks 99. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
