Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA -The Tacoma Rainiers fell short of collecting a series sweep and dropped their finale with the Salt Lake Bees 5-2 in front of 5,284 fans at Cheney Stadium on Sunday.

Following a one-hour rain delay prior to first pitch, third baseman Jeff Baisley gave the Bees an early 2-0 lead with a one-out, two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Tacoma came within a run in the bottom of the sixth after Mike Wilson scored from first base on a missed catch error committed by Salt Lake following a Matt Mangini single.

Rainiers infielder Sean Kazmar matched a Gil Velazquez solo home run in the top of the seventh with a one-run blast of his own in the bottom of the inning, but the Bees bounced with two more runs in the eighth. The infielder Velazquez hit a two-out, two-run double that ultimately ended the Rainiers win streak at three games.

Kazmar and catcher Ralph Henriquez collected a team-high two hits each on Sunday, with Kazmar collecting one double, one home run and one RBI.

Salt Lake's Bear Bay (7-5) tossed seven innings in a winning effort for the Bees. Bay limited the Rainiers to two runs, one earned, on seven hits with three walks and a season-high seven strikeouts. Reliever Horacio Ramirez picked up his fifth save of the season after collecting the final three outs in the ninth.

Starter Anthony Vasquez (1-2) was dealt the loss for the Rainiers despite turning in his second consecutive quality start. The left-hander held the Bees to three runs on six hits over seven innings, while walking two and fanning six.

The Rainiers (47-48) head out on an eight-game road trip that begins with a four-game series at Tucson and wraps up with a four-game stop at Salt Lake. Left-hander Mauricio Robles (0-0, -.--) is scheduled to start for Tacoma in the series opener at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday against Padres right-hander Jon Van Benschoten (0-0, -.--). The game will be broadcast live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
