Aces Sweep Sky Sox with 6-4 Win

RENO, Nev.- Reno used timely hitting and another stellar performance by the bullpen to hold off Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon, earning its first series sweep of the season with a 6-4 win at Aces Ballpark.

Despite Colorado Springs taking an early lead for the third-straight game and hitting three home runs, the Aces came back to win their sixth-straight game overall and first series sweep of the 2011 slate. With the Sky Sox leading 2-0, Tony Abreu tied the score with a two-run single in the third. After Colorado Springs took the lead again in the sixth, Reno answered once again on a Konrad Schmidt RBI groundout and a run-scoring single by Mark Hallberg.

The Aces would take the lead for good in the seventh when Schmidt drove in his second run of the day, and Reno added an insurance run in the eighth on a Robby Hammock solo home run to center.

But the story of the afternoon was the Aces bullpen, which held the Sky Sox to just one hit and no runs over the game's final three innings, culminating in Bryan Shaw's team-leading ninth save of the season. Daniel Stange (3-1) earned the win in relief of starter Armando Galarraga, and Esmerling Vasquez set up Shaw with a scoreless eighth. Shaw remained perfect in save opportunities this season, capping off a series that saw Reno closers rack up four saves in four chances.

The loss fell to Sky Sox reliever Josh Roenicke (1-4), who gave up the eventual game-winning run. Starter Edgar Gonzalez took a no decision, surrendering four earned runs in 5.2 innings of work.

Schmidt and Abreu finished with two RBIs each for Reno, while Cody Ransom and Collin Cowgill chipped in with two hits apiece. Mark Hallberg extended his hitting streak to seven games with a two-hit afternoon, his fourth-straight multi-hit effort.

First-place Reno opens a four-game series with the Fresno Grizzlies Monday evening at Aces Ballpark. Aces LHP Wade Miley (2-0, 2.57 ERA) will get the nod against Grizzlies LHP Chuck Lofgren (0-0, No ERA). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. PT.
