Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Binghamton, NY- The Binghamton Mets scored in only one inning on Monday night, but that inning proved to be just enough to get them the victory. Allan Dykstra started a seven-run rally in the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff home run, and Jeurys Familia threw five scoreless innings, as the Mets defeated the Sea Dogs, 7-6 in the series opener at NYSEG Stadium.

After a scoreless first inning, the Mets' offense exploded in the second, putting seven runs on the board, as twelve hitters made their way to the plate. Allan Dykstra started the scoring, leading off the frame with a home run to right field. Salomon Manriquez followed with a walk, before three straight singles by Brahiam Maldonado, Raul Reyes, and Eric Campbell. Jose Coronado's fielder's choice plated Binghamton's fourth run of the inning, before Matt den Dekker, Jordany Valdespin, and Joshua Satin all picked up run-scoring singles.

Despite the seven-run second, Chris Balcom-Miller (1-4) was able to go five innings for Portland, allowing nine hits and one walk, while striking out one.

Binghamton starter Jeurys Familia (1-2) held the Sea Dogs' offense scoreless on four hits, three walks, and six strikeouts in five innings, but as soon as he exited, Portland picked up a run. Will Middlebrooks led off the sixth with a single, and advanced to second base on a walk to Tim Federowicz. After Reynaldo Rodriguez struck out, Oscar Tejeda lined a single to left field. Brahiam Maldonado bobbled the ball, allowing Middlebrooks to score on the play.

Portland added three more runs in the seventh, cutting the Mets' lead to three. With two outs in the frame, Chih-Hsien Chiang started the rally, doubling to right-center field. Will Middlebrooks followed with a double, driving in Chiang with the Sea Dogs' second run of the night. After Tim Federowicz walked, Reynaldo Rodriguez drove a double to right-center, knocking in Middlebrooks and Federowicz.

Then, in the ninth inning, the Sea Dogs rallied again, keeping the fans at the edges of their seats. Chih-Hsien Chiang led off with a double, and quickly scored, as Will Middlebrooks singled to right field. Tim Federowicz followed with a single, knocking Binghamton reliever Josh Stinson out of the game.

Rhiner Cruz took over on the hill at that point, and promptly hit Reynaldo Rodriguez, loading the bases. He then walked Oscar Tejeda, forcing in a run. However, Cruz settled down after that, striking out Vladimir Frias and Mitch Dening, before getting Jon Hee to fly out to right, ending the game in the Mets' favor, 7-6.

Portland and Binghamton will continue their series on Tuesday night with a doubleheader, beginning at 5:35. Stephen Fife (9-3, 3.50) will take the mound for Portland in the opener, while Binghamton will turn to Tobi Stoner (3-3, 5.54). Neither club has announced a starting pitcher for game two.
