Big Inning Propels B-Mets in 7-6 Win

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets jumped out to an early lead with seven runs in the second inning and held on late to earn a 7-6 win over the Portland Sea Dogs in the series opener at NYSEG Stadium tonight.

After a scoreless first, Binghamton unloaded on Portland starter Chris Balcom-Miller. Allan Dykstra kicked off the offensive inning with a long home run over the video board in right field for his ninth round-tripper of the season.

The B-Mets would tack on seven more hits and add six more runs in the inning. Binghamton sent twelve men to the plate and set season-highs for runs and hits in one inning.

Raul Reyes, Eric Campbell, Matt den Dekker, and Josh Satin all knocked in a run each with singles. Jose Coronado added an RBI of his own on a fielder's choice.

B-Mets starter Jeurys Familia returned to the mound for the first time since June 18. The right hander used the lay-off to his advantage. He tossed five shutout innings and struck out six along the way.

Jeff Kaplan took over in the sixth and allowed one run on two hits and a walk. Erik Turgeon took the baton in the seventh and gave up three runs on three hits, all of which were doubles.

After their big second inning, the B-Mets offense was spent. Balcom-Miller allowed just one hit over three scoreless innings to cap his night. He retired the final eight B-Mets he faced. Caleb Clay took over and allowed two hits while keeping Binghamton off the board over the final three innings.

Owning a 7-4 lead, Josh Stinson received the ball and hurled a shutout eighth before running into trouble in the ninth. Chih-Shien Chiang led off with a double and Will Middlebrooks brought him home with a double of his own to cut the B-Mets lead to two.

Tim Federowicz, the next batter, singled to chase Stinson from the game. With the tying run at first, manager Wally Backman called upon Rhiner Cruz to seal the deal.

Already in a hole, Cruz dug himself deeper by hitting Reynaldo Rodriguez with the first pitch he threw to load the bases. Cruz then walked Oscar Tejeda on five pitches to bring home another run.

Jeremy Hazelbaker, a pinch-runner representing the tying run at third base, would be left stranded as Cruz locked things down.

The Dominican right-hander got Vladimir Diaz to chase a pitch in the dirt for his first strike out, blew a fastball past Mitch Dening for the second out, and induced Jon Hee to fly out to right field to end the game.

With his fourth save of the year, Cruz made a winner of Familia for the first time at the Double-A level. Balcom-Miller took his fourth loss of the season.

The B-Mets (30-52) continue their five-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs with a doubleheader tomorrow at 5:35pm. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:20pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
