Squirrels Snap Sea Dogs Win Streak at Six

Portland, Maine- The Richmond Flying Squirrels (28-30) scored eight runs off the Portland bullpen defeating the Sea Dogs 9-3 Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. It was the first loss this month for Portland, who had their six game winning streak snapped. Portland falls to 20-37 on the season.

The Eastern League's worst hitting team; Richmond (.224) was able to explode for 14 hits and nine runs against Portland's Eastern League worst ERA (4.48).

Richmond struck first when Drew Biery collected a RBI double in the fourth inning off Brock Huntzinger. Huntzinger would provide the Sea Dogs with an outstanding start allowing one run on five hits in six innings of work. He struck out seven and walked two. Huntzinger kept the Sea Dogs in the game working out of sixth inning jam, down 1-0, the first two batters reached when Huntzinger proceeded to strike out the next three batters to get out of the inning with no damage.

The Eastern League's reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, Ryan Verdugo, got the start for Richmond and took a no-hitter into the fourth inning when Tim Federowicz's pop-up would find a hole when both the centerfielder Christian and shortstop Sharlon Schoop failed to make the catch for Portland's first hit of the game.

Verdugo (4-1) tossed seven solid innings allowing one run while scattering five hits. He recorded six strikeouts and walked six as he earned his fourth win of the season.

Chih-Hsien Chiang singled in the bottom of the sixth to extend his hitting streak to eight games. With two outs in the inning Jon Hee singled and Oscar Tejeda delivered a RBI single to tie the game at one a piece.

Justin Christian snapped a 1-1 tie with a RBI triple scoring Ryan Lormand in the seventh inning off Cesar Cabral (1-4) paving the way to the Richmond victory. Christian would score on a Roger Kieschnick RBI single to give the Flying Squirrels an insurance run at 3-1.

Seth Garrison entered the game in the eighth for Portland and was rocked by the Flying Squirrels offense surrendering six runs in two thirds of an inning. A two run homer by Charlie Culberson highlighted the offensive explosion as Richmond took a 9-1 lead.

Federowicz provided a spark for the Sea Dogs when he launched a two run homer, his fifth of the year, over the Maine Monster in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Jeremy Hazelbaker extended his hit streak to eight games with a single in the fifth and proceeded to record his team leading eighth stolen base.

The series will conclude with a 7:00 PM game Thursday night at Hadlock Field. Portland will send righty Alex Wilson (5-3, 2.62) to the mound in search of his sixth win.
