Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Altoona, Pennsylvania- Jeremy Hazelbaker led off with a home run against the Altoona Curve. He and the Portland Sea Dogs wouldn't look back, beating the Curve 7-2 for their third straight win. Hazelbaker later added a two-run double. Chih-Hsien Chiang went 4-for-5 with a home run. Jeremy Kehrt (1-0) pitched a strong five and two-thirds innings to pick up the win in his second start of the year.
Entering June, Portland had won just three road games all season, and had lost ten straight after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to the New Britain Rock Cats. Since then, they've outscored opponents 26-11 in the last three wins, all away from Hadlock Field. The pitching has been the key with Sea Dogs pitching having allowed just two earned runs over the last 25 and two-thirds innings.
Portland jumped on Altoona starter Jared Hughes (3-3) when Hazelbaker blasted a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall. It was the first leadoff home run by the Sea Dogs since Ryan Kalish hit one on Opening Day last season. The next inning Hazelbaker made it 3-0 when he ripped a two-run double down the left field line with the bases loaded. The Curve scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third to make it a two-run game.
However, the Sea Dogs would add a run in each of the next three innings. Alex Hassan roped an RBI single in the fourth and sixth. Chiang crushed his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot, off Tim Alderson leading off the fifth inning. Altoona tacked on a run off Eammon Portice in the eighth before Portland scored again with a Tim Federowicz RBI single, following up Chiang's lead-off triple.
Kehrt retired the first eight batters he faced before giving up the unearned run in the third. The righty picked up the win in just his second start of the season. Kehrt spent part of last season as part of the Sea Dogs' starting rotation. Portland is 2-0 in games he has started this year, with the other victory coming in the second half of a doubleheader against the Trenton Thunder.
The Sea Dogs continue their series in Altoona tomorrow night. The three-game set wraps up Sunday with a rare 6:00 PM evening start. Portland returns to Hadlock Field on Tuesday, June 7th. The team kicks off a six-game homestand against the Richmond Flying Squirrels and Bowie Baysox. The Sea Dogs will celebrate Good Neighbor Night, sponsored by State Farm Insurance on Wednesday, June 8th. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
