Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Trenton, New Jersey - Stolmy Pimentel (0-6) struggled and the Trenton Thunder took advantage with six runs over the first two innings. That paved the way for a 6-1 win and a three-game series sweep of the Portland Sea Dogs Sunday afternoon. Pimentel lasted just an inning and a third, allowing seven hits and all six Trenton runs. The four outs recorded is the shortest outing by any Portland starting pitcher this season.
On the other side, Manny Banuelos met some adversity as well, but battled through four and two-thirds innings, allowing only one unearned run. Jeremy Kehrt and Cesar Cabral came through with six and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief, giving the Sea Dogs offense a chance to get back in the game. They only managed to scrape one run across though in the third inning off Banuelos via a Tim Federowicz sacrifice fly.
The trouble for Pimentel and Portland started immediately. Ray Kruml led off with a single for the Thunder. Kruml advanced to second on a balk, then scored on a double by Corban Joseph. After Pimentel got Austin Romine to ground out, last night's hero, Brad Suttle, delivered a two-run home run to make it 3-0 Trenton. After a quick meeting with pitching coach Bob Kipper, Pimentel got the final two outs of the first.
The second inning would not prove to be much better for the 21-year old. After back-to-back singles, Pimentel walked Kruml to load the bases. Joseph hit a sacrifice fly and Romine followed with a two-run single to knock Pimentel out of the game. That would end the offensive onslaught from the Thunder as they managed just three baserunners the rest of the game, but the damage was already done.
The Sea Dogs nearly mounted a comeback in the ninth inning. Oscar Tejeda singled to lead off the inning against Pat Venditte. The Thunder reliever struck out Will Vazquez, but then surrendered walks to Mitch Dening and Alex Hassan. Trenton called on Josh Schmidt who managed to get Ryan Lavarnway to strike out with the bases loaded, ending the game. Portland is now just 3-19 in road games this year.
The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field tomorrow for their longest homestand of the year, nine games in eight days. Portland starts a four-game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Blue Jays, tomorrow night at 6:00 PM. May 24th will be Bark in the Park night. Mike Piazza's Dog Tricks will be on hand as well that night, performing for the crowd between innings. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
