Offense Squanders Solid Start: Flyers Fall in Game One 1-0

Orange County Flyers News Release

WAILUKU, Hawaii - The Orange County Flyers starting pitching again limited Na Koa Ikaika Maui but the offense came up empty-handed in a 1-0 loss at Iron Maehara Stadium in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader (7-inning game).

Flyers starting pitcher Zac Cline threw six strong innings, a complete game, allowing one run off five hits, as OC squandered a second solid start from its rotation. Cline (6-3) took his first loss with the Flyers since being traded from the Yuma Scorpions in OC's third shutout of the season and second in as many nights.

Jermy Acey singled to begin the second inning and advanced to second base on a Michael Higa base hit. After Phil Avlas flew out to centerfield to advance Acey to third, Mark Okano's sacrifice fly cashed Acey for early 1-0 Maui lead.

OC got early base hits, but Maui turned double plays in the first and second inning to negate early scoring chances for the Flyers. Orange County got only two runners as far as second base during the game.

Maui's Harold Williams earned the win with six innings of work, scattering four hits, to improve to 5-0 this year. Williams injured his leg being sent from first base in the sixth inning, forcing Maui's scheduled starter for Game 3 of the playoff series from the game.

The Flyers did not make an error for the first time in this series after committing 14 over the first four games in Maui.

The Orange County Flyers (50-34, 28-11 second half) begin a best-of-five playoff series against Na Koa Ikaika Maui (55-25, 29-8) in Maui on Tuesday, September 7, and will host Game 3 of the series on Friday, September 10 at 7:05pm at Goodwin Field. OC will host Games 4 and 5, if necessary, on September 11 and 12.

The Flyers continue this seven-game series to wrap up the regular season in Maui tonight with the second game of a doubleheader. All games from Maui can be heard live through Live365 with Josh Feldman through www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com
