Red Sox Call up Pitcher Robert Coello

September 5, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) News Release

(San Ramon, CA. September 5, 2010). The Golden Baseball League announced today that the Boston Red Sox have added RHP Robert Coello to the big league roster. He will join fellow GBL alumni Daniel Nava at Fenway Park today.

The 25-year-old Coello went 7-6 with a 3.86 ERA in 32 games (13 starts) between Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland so far this season. He has struck out 130 men in 107 1/3 innings and held opponents to a .192 average while with the PawSox.

Coello, 25, is a 6-5, 235 pound right-handed relief pitcher originally drafted in the 20th round out of Oskaloosa-Walton Community College by the Cincinnati Reds in 2004 as a catcher but did not sign. He converted to pitching and was signed by the Los Angeles Angels for the 2007 season where he was sent to the Arizona Rookie League and compiled a 1-1 record with a stingy 1.37 E.R.A in 20 appearances as he struck out 26 and walked only 7. Not re-signed by the Angels for 2008, he was quickly signed by the Calgary Vipers and pitched for the first month of the GBL season out of their bullpen before being dealt to the Edmonton Cracker Cats. He was dominant for Edmonton as he appeared in 20 games, posted a record of 2-0 and an E.R.A of 1.78 while allowing an opponents batting average of just .191 and used his dominant fastball to strikeout 47 batters in 40 innings pitched. This caught the attention of Boston and his contract was purchased days after Edmonton was eliminated from the playoffs.

Coello is the 6th Golden Baseball League player to be on a major league roster this year, and the second member of the 2010 Boston Red Sox. He may not be the last this season as 11 other former GBL players are currently playing for AAA teams.
