LHP Donald Brandt and OF Drew Miller Named Golden Baseball League Players of the Month

September 5, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) News Release

(San Ramon, CA.) - The Golden Baseball League announced today the August winners of the Player and Pitcher of the Month award. Based on recommendations from league official statistician Pointstreak.com, this month's winners are left-handed starting pitcher Donald Brandt of Na Koa Ikaika Maui and outfielder Drew Miller of the Calgary Vipers.

Brandt, 24, set a league record for wins in a month as he went 6-0 in seven starts, including a complete game 3-hit 1-run effort over Orange County, raising his league leading record for the season to a perfect 14-0. He threw 38 innings in August, struck out 40, walked 15, and posted an E.R.A. of 2.60 for the month as his team wrapped up the second half GBL South Division title. A 6-3, 195 lefty, he went undrafted after finishing his collegiate career at Santa Clara University in 2008. He signed with the Yuma Scorpions late in the season that year and was traded to the Chico Outlaws. He had an outstanding first half of 2009 for Chico leading to the Milwaukee Brewers purchasing his contract while he was pitching in the GBL All-Star game. The Brewers sent him to A ball to finish 2009 where he dominated striking out 33 in 25 innings pitched and walking only 6. He was in spring training with Milwaukee competing for a AA roster spot but the pitching staff was stacked up and he was released. Signing with the new Maui team was his first choice as his family lives on the island and he's been dominating the veteran-laden GBL hitters all year.

Miller, 30, has been a perennial All-Star and the heart of the Calgary Vipers for the last three seasons in the GBL. In August he hit for a .416 average and led the leage in HRs with 5 and RBIs with 26 for the month. His bat has been a key reasons for the resurgence of the Calgary team that resulted in their winning the second half North Division landing them in the playoffs to defend their 2009 GBL Championship. The Medicine Hat, Canada native -- known as the Bat From The Hat -- is in his 9th minor league season, and his fifth for the Calgary Vipers. He has a lifetime .311 batting average and on-base percentage of .405. This year he is leading the GBL in RBIs with 91 and is hitting .352 for the season with a career high 20 home runs.
