Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Dayton, OH - In his curtain call in a Hot Rods uniform, Kyle Lobstein threw six shutout innings to lead the Hot Rods to a 5-1 win over the Dayton Dragons. Lobstein allowed just two hits with seven strikeouts to end his Hot Rods season with his ninth victory. Bowling Green has taken the first two games of this series and will go for its third straight road sweep over the Dragons on Friday night.

Early on the game was a pitcher's duel as Lobstein was matching zeroes with Dayton's Jacob Johnson through the first three innings. In the fourth, the Hot Rods broke finally broke through. Ty Morrison was hit by a pitch to begin the frame; he then stole second and advanced to third on a single by Julio Cedeno. Brett Nommensen followed with a groundout that scored Morrison to give the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, the Dragons had a chance to tie it against Lobstein. Frank Pfister singled and then took second on an errant pick-off throw by Lobstein. After a groundout, Pfister stood at third base for David Vidal, taking a big secondary lead. Catcher Mark Thomas noticed this, and on an 0-1 pitch to Vidal, Thomas threw down to third base and picked Pfister off to end the threat.

After the Dragons stranded another pair of runners in the bottom of the fifth, the Hot Rods busted the game open in the sixth. With one out, Morrison drew his second walk, moving to taking second base on a single by Cedeno. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch to bring up Nommensen. The Hot Rods right fielder dribbled a ball down the third base line that was fielded by Vidal. Vidal tried to throw to home plate but his throw hit Morrison and deflected to the Hot Rods dugout. The throwing miscue allowed Morrison and Cedeno to score to make it 3-0 Hot Rods.

That was it for the starter Johnson, who left for relief pitcher Daniel Renken. Renken immediately allowed a double to Mark Thomas, scoring Nommensen to bump the lead to 4-0. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Kyle Spraker plated the Hot Rods fifth run with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Lobstein worked one more inning after the big rally, completing his night after striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth. He allowed just two hits, walked three, and struck out seven. The pair of hits ties his career-low while seven K's fell one short of his season high. He finished his season with a 9-8 record and a 4.14 ERA in 27 starts.

Scott Shuman took over for Lobstein, working two scoreless frames with four strikeouts. He now has 111 on the season in just 71.2 innings, earning the best strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio in the Midwest League at 13.93. Matt Stabelfeld pitched the ninth allowing a solo home run before retiring the next three batters to lock up the Hot Rods first series victory since late July.

Cedeno led the Hot Rods offensively picking up four of their seven hits. Nommensen drove in two runs to take the team lead with 68 on the season. Thomas also finished with a pair of hits and is now 4-for-8 with three RBI in the series.

The series continues on Friday night with the finale as the Hot Rods go for their 11th straight victory in Dayton. RHP Albert Suarez (1-5, 4.42) makes his final start of the season against RHP Clayton Shunick (3-1, 4.08). First pitch is at 6:07 PM CDT.
