Burlington Bees News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA (September 2, 2010) - The Kernels set the tone early on Thursday night with a pair of solo home runs to lead off their first two trips to the plate, and never trailed in a 4-1 win over the Bees at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Jean Segura launched Sugar Ray Marimon's second pitch of the first inning over the right field fence to put his team up early, and Jose Jimenez doubled the lead with a towering blast to open the bottom of the second.
Marimon (L, 2-6) battled his way through five innings on the hill, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks. The Bees managed just one run of support while the Colombian righty was on the hill, and it came in the top of the fifth. After Gerard Hall walked with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error by Cedar Rapids starter Tyler Kehrer, Whit Merrifield laced a liner to left field with two outs. Though Merrifield was thrown out attempting to reach second on the play, Hall scampered home to bring his club to within one.
The Kernels, however, added a pair of unearned runs of their own in the fifth in support of Kehrer (W, 6-5). The lefty, facing the Bees for the first time in his 27th appearance of the season, allowed one unearned run on three hits in seven innings with five punchouts.
Jean Segura led the Cedar Rapids offense with a 3-for-4 night with an RBI, falling a triple shy of the cycle. On the otherside, Merrifield was the only Bee to manage multiple hits. Ben Theriot went 0-for-4, snapping his hitting streak at 10 games.
The start of the game was delayed by 16 minutes after showers swept through the area prior to the game, shortening batting practice for the Bees.
The Bees play their final road game of 2010 on Friday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The game will get under way at 6:35, and you can catch the action live on GoBees.com and Country Legends 1360 at 6:15.
