Penguins Announce 2010-11 Schedule

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will open their 12th season of play at home on October 9 when they take on the Hershey Bears.

The Penguins will play an 80-game unbalanced schedule, meaning they will face opponents from the East Division 56 times (28 home/28 road) during the regular season, while taking on foes from the Atlantic and North Divisions a total of 24 times (12 home/12 road). The Penguins will not face a West Division opponent this season, and overall, the team will meet 16 of 29 AHL opponents.

The Penguins will play an eight-game season series against two teams celebrating their inaugural season - the Albany Devils, the new AHL affiliate of the New Jersey Devils, and the Charlotte Checkers, the new AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes. The Devils make their first visit to northeastern Pennsylvania on November 24, while the Checkers come to Wilkes-Barre for the first time ever on January 23.

The Penguins will welcome the Abbotsford Heat, AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, for their first-ever games at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on December 15 and 17. The Penguins will also travel to British Columbia for one of their longest road trips of the season, which will span March 11-16 and will include a two-game stop in Winnipeg for a pair with the Manitoba Moose.

Another highlight of the Penguins' schedule is the team's first "home" game in the Steel City since the 2001-02 season. The brand-new CONSOL Energy Center will play host to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton battling Hershey on Thursday, December 30. The Bears are the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals, who fill face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2010 Bridgestone Winter Classic to be held at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field on New Year's Day.

The majority of Penguins home games (29 of 40) will be played on weekend nights and afternoons, with seven games taking place on Wednesday evenings and three on a Tuesday evening.

The longest scheduled home-stand at Mohegan Sun Arena is three games (December 3-8, January 22-26, and March 19-23), while the team's longest stretch of games away from home will be four games (March 11-16 and March 25-30). The team will also play two road games at neutral sites, as the Albany Devils will host the Penguins at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall on December 11, and the NHL's Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia will pit the Penguins against the Adirondack Phantoms on January 21.
