
Grizzlies Sweep Cruisers; Warren Becomes Wins Leader

SAUGET, Ill.- The Gateway Grizzlies defeated the Oakland County Cruisers 9-6 Sunday night at GCS Ballpark, to sweep the three-game series. The Grizzlies have won five straight and are a season-best 10 games over .500 at 43-33.
The win moved current manager Phil Warren past Danny Cox as the Grizzlies all-time leader in managerial wins. Warren has now won 198 games as the Gateway skipper.
The Grizzlies led 6-1 after five innings Sunday night, before the Cruisers came back. Oakland County (45-32) scored a run in the sixth, then tallied four more in the seventh to even the contest 6-6.
The Grizzlies immediately answered, scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh for the 9-6 score. Gordie Gronkowski capped the seventh with a two-run double off the center field wall.
Nick Walters (4-0) earned the win in relief. Walters allowed a run in 1.1 innings of work. Jake Shafer tossed the final 1.1 innings to earn his eighth save of the year. He struck out two.
Gronkowski was 2 for 5 with the two RBIs. Landon Hernandez, Jason Patton, Charlie Lisk and Matty Johnson each had two hits. Hernandez added his second home run in as many days, a solo shot in the fourth. Logan Parker hit a two-run homer in the third, his third of the series.
Monday is a league-wide off day. The Grizzlies remain at home to host the Traverse City Beach Bums in a three-game series beginning Tuesday at GCS Ballpark.
