EVERETT, Wash. - Edlando Seco, Willy Kesler and Jason Markovitz combined on a four-hit shutout of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (17-19) in the AquaSox 2-0 win Saturday night in front of 2,447 fans at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Kesler (3-2, 2.29 ERA) threw a season-high 3.1 scoreless innings for the Frogs (25-11), allowing three hits and striking out five. The New Mexico alumnus has given up only two runs in his last 14.2 innings of work.
Salem-Keizer reliever Matthew Graham (0-3, 7.64 ERA) took the loss.
Seco started the game and held the Volcanoes hitless through four, finishing with five innings pitched, six strikeouts, three walks and one hit allowed. Seco has been dominant of late, having allowed only one earned run in each of his previous three outings. His last start came July 19, the division-clinching game, when he threw five innings, allowed only three hits and one earned run while striking out nine.
The Sox had hits in each of the first six innings but were unable to push a run across until the seventh, even with plenty of good chances to score. The Frogs loaded the bases in the first, Evan Sharpley was out on a collision at home plate in the fourth and back-to-back outs ended a second and third, one-out threat in the fifth.
Hawkins Gebbers finally broke the scoreless tie in the seventh inning, connecting on a one-out single to score Terry Serrano. Serrano continued his domination of Volcanoes pitching Saturday night, going 2-for-3 and scoring the winning run in the seventh. Serrano is now hitting a robust .500 (15-for-30) against Salem-Keizer.
Jimmy Jacquot gave the Sox an insurance run in the eighth inning with a one-out solo home run to straightaway center. Jacquot, Serrano and Kevin Rivers each had two hits apiece to lead the AquaSox offense.
Jason Markovitz recorded the final two outs of the ballgame to secure his third save of the season.
Yoervis Medina (2-2, 3.53 ERA) takes the hill for game two of the three-game series against right-hander Edward Concepcion (3-3, 4.68 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Sunday is Root Beer Float Day at the ballpark; with the opportunity to enjoy $5 unlimited floats throughout the game. The first 500 customers also receive a limited edition AquaSox mug with the floats.
Local celebrities will play ball for charity following the contest in the Celebrity Baseball Challenge, benefiting the American Cancer Society. Popular names such as Spencer Hawes, Bill Wixey and Lawyer Milloy will take part in the hour-long game between Q13 Fox and KISW.
