PawSox Drop Fifth Straight Game, 11-2 to Toledo

July 21, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

Pawtucket starting pitcher Fabio Castro picked up the loss despite allowing one run Wednesday afternoon as the PawSox dropped a matinee decision to the Toledo Mud Hens 11-2.

Castro, who saw his ERA dip to 5.86, dropped his record to 4-7 after throwing 74 pitches in front of a crowd of 10,201 fans. In 3.1 innings of work, Castro struck out five and walked five while allowing just one hit. The lone run charged to Castro was a run allowed by Randor Bierd who came on in relief of Castro in the fourth inning.

Bierd allowed the one inherited runner to score and also surrendered three more runs in 0.2 innings as Toledo had four runs cross the plate in the fourth inning.

The Mud Hens struck for four more runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and one run in the ninth to bury the PawSox on a hazy and humid afternoon from McCoy Stadium. Offensively, four players for Toledo had a pair of RBI while Will Rhymes and Max St. Pierre combined for seven of Toledo's 13 hits on the game.

While two Mud Hens combined for seven hits, the PawSox collected just six hits as a team, but a seventh inning two-run home run by center fielder Ryan Kalish prevented Pawtucket from being shut out. With two outs Gil Velazquez walked and Kalish smacked the next pitch over the fence in right field for his third home run of the season.

Niuman Romero, Aaron Bates, Gustavo Molina and Velazquez all picked up singles while Argenis Reyes doubled in the third inning to account for the rest of the PawSox offense on the afternoon.

The PawSox wrap up the four-game series against the Mud Hens at 7:05 p.m. Thursday. Pawtucket's Felix Doubront (3-2, 2.36 ERA) will battle Toledo's Charlie Furbush (0-0, 0.00 ERA) who will be making his first career triple-A start.
