Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Rochester shortstop Trevor Plouffe went 3-for-5 including a pair of home runs and a double to drive home five runs in the Red Wings' 9-2 victory over Pawtucket Thursday night.
Plouffe's first hit was a double in the second inning that scored two runs and extended Rochester's early lead to 4-0. In the fifth inning, Plouffe followed a leadoff walk by centerfielder Dustin Martin- one of his four walks on the evening- with a line drive homerun into the PawSox bullpen in left field. Plouffe capped off his evening with a second homerun in the top of the eighth inning to make the game 9-1.
Pawtucket Red Sox' starting pitcher Robert Coello entered Thursday's game with a 1.61 ERA but left with it significantly higher after allowing six earned runs over five innings. The first of the four runs allowed by Coello, who saw his ERA rise from 1.61 to 3.29, came with two outs.
Coello finished with four walks allowed and four hits surrendered, including two home runs, on the evening. With the loss, the PawSox starter saw his record even at 2-2 on the season.
By contrast, the Red Wings' starter Glen Perkins entered with a 7.39 ERA and a 2-8 record. He lowered his ERA to 6.98 and secured his third win of the season by scattering nine hits over six innings to allow just one run. Perkins struck out six and walked none in his outing.
Lars Anderson and Jorge Jimenez knocked in the two PawSox runs. In the fifth inning with Ryan Kalish on second base, Anderson hit a ball up the middle that was knocked down by Plouffe. As he scrambled to retrieve the ball Kalish rounded third with no hesitation and scored without a play. Jimenez served a single to right field that scored Josh Reddick who reached with a one-out double.
The PawSox outhit the Red Wings 14-to-9 but stranded 11 baserunners on the evening to stall what was an otherwise successful offensive evening. Four Pawtucket starters had multi-hit games, led by Ryan Kalish's four-hit performance. In his last eight games, Kalish is hitting at a blistering .515 clip-- 17-for-33.
The four-game series will conclude Thursday at 6:05 p.m. as Adam Mills (3-3, 4.23 ERA) will take the hill for the PawSox and face Rochester's Matt Fox (4-7, 4.07 ERA).
