Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, shut out the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 9-0 Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Chiefs are now 8-3 against the IronPigs this season.
Syracuse set the tone by scoring runs in each of the first four innings.
In the first, Justin Maxwell slapped a double to left for Syracuse's first hit of the night. With two outs, rightfielder Jason Botts ripped a single to center, scoring Maxwell for the game's first run.
After grabbing another run in the second, five Chiefs came around to score in the third, extending the Syracuse lead to seven. Leonard Davis came home with the Chiefs' first run of the inning on another double by Maxwell. After a Chase Lambin flyout and an intentional walk to Botts, Seth Bynum drilled a double down the left-field line for two more runs. Bynum scored later in the inning on a fielding error by Lehigh Valley first baseman Melvin Dorta. Chiefs starting pitcher Shairon Martis singled home Chris Duncan for Syracuse's fifth and final run of the inning. The single was Martis's first hit of season. The Chiefs sent ten men to the plate in the frame.
An inning later, Justin Maxwell went deep for his sixth homer of the year and his third hit of the night. Maxwell went three for four in the game to raise his batting average ten points from .286 to .296.
After failing to score in the fifth, Leonard Davis put the Chiefs back on the scoreboard with a solo homer past a leaping Domonic Brown in right field. The long ball was Davis's eighth and his only hit of the game.
Shairon Martis tossed seven shutout innings to record his sixth win of the year. Martis gave up six hits and one walk. He struck out four. Jason Bergmann and Atahualpa Severino pitched two scoreless innings of relief to preserve the shutout.
Former Chief Ty Taubenheim dropped to 0-2 with the loss Thursday night. In his 2 1/3 innings of work, Taubenheim surrendered five hits and six runs (five earned). He walked two and struck out one.
The Chiefs will play their final home game before the All-Star Break Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse righthander Erik Arnesen will start against Lehigh Valley lefthander J.A. Happ (0-0, 5.79). First pitch will be at 7:00.
